Description

Mode of action

Spinetoram belongs to the spinosyn chemical class. It is a derivative of natural metabolites obtained from the fermentation of soil actinomycetes species Saccharopolyspora spinosa, which has been chemically modified to improve stability and efficacy.

The mode of action is based on a unique interaction with nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the insect nervous system. Spinetoram causes hyperactivation of these receptors, leading to disruption of nerve impulses, paralysis, tremors, and eventually the death of the pest.

The substance possesses significant contact and stomach activity. This means that to achieve maximum efficiency, the active ingredient must come into contact with the insect's body or be ingested along with the treated plant tissue.

An important feature is the translaminar activity of Spinetoram. Due to this property, the substance is capable of penetrating the leaf surface, protecting those parts of the plant that were not reached by the spray solution.

Spinetoram is characterized by high selectivity and relatively low toxicity to many beneficial insect species, making it a preferred tool in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs.

What it targets

The active ingredient demonstrates high effectiveness against a wide spectrum of Lepidoptera, including various species of cutworms, moths, and borers. It is also active against thrips, certain types of beetles, and dipteran insects.

The product is successfully used to control Western flower thrips, which are known for their high resistance to other insecticide groups. Its use allows for a significant reduction in the economic damage caused by quarantine pests.

Spinetoram is effective against leaf-mining insects, whose larvae develop inside plant tissues, as the substance's ability to penetrate the mesophyll allows it to target concealed pests.

In field conditions, it is used against the Colorado potato beetle on potatoes and tomatoes, providing reliable protection during the peak emergence period of larvae of different instars.

The wide range of applications covers vegetables, fruit trees, berry crops, and ornamental plants, both in open field and greenhouse conditions.

Rates and timing

Application timing for Spinetoram is closely tied to the phenological stages of pest development. The best results are achieved when treating young larvae during their most active feeding periods.

Application rates vary depending on the crop type, level of infestation, and biological characteristics of the pest. Standard concentrations are usually in the range of 0.2–0.5 L/ha for field crops.

The number of applications per season is strictly regulated to prevent the development of resistance. It is recommended to rotate products containing Spinetoram with insecticides from other chemical classes.

The spray solution must be prepared according to the manufacturer's instructions. It is essential to ensure uniform coverage of the entire leaf surface to realize the full potential of translaminar activity.

Applications should be performed under favorable weather conditions, avoiding direct exposure to high-intensity sunlight to maintain the stability of the molecule.

Restrictions

Despite its high biological activity, Spinetoram requires strict adherence to safety regulations. Personal protective equipment for respiratory, skin, and eye protection must be used when handling the concentrate.

The product may be moderately toxic to certain pollinator species during direct contact, so spraying during periods of peak bee activity should be avoided.

Pre-harvest intervals (PHI) must be taken into account and vary depending on the specific crop regulations. These intervals must be strictly followed to ensure the safety of the final produce.

Storage should be in the original container, away from fire hazards and moisture. Opened containers must be tightly sealed and kept in a place inaccessible to children.

Disposal of remaining spray solution into water bodies or drainage systems is strictly prohibited. Spraying equipment must be thoroughly rinsed after applications.
