Mode of action

The European pine sawfly nucleopolyhedrovirus (NsNPV) is a highly specific entomopathogenic virus used as an active ingredient in biological insecticides to manage sawfly populations.

The mode of action is ingestion-based: larvae consume needles contaminated with viral occlusion bodies. Once inside the insect's midgut, the alkaline environment dissolves the protein matrix, releasing virions.

The virus enters the nuclei of host cells, hijacking the cellular machinery to produce massive quantities of new viral particles, which leads to tissue disintegration.

This process results in the larva ceasing to feed almost immediately and dying within several days, depending on environmental temperature and the insect's developmental stage.

After death, the larval cuticle liquefies, releasing billions of viral particles back into the forest canopy, which creates a natural epizootic cycle to suppress future outbreaks.

What it targets

The primary target for this biological agent is the European pine sawfly (Neodiprion sertifer), a serious defoliator of various pine species.

The virus shows high specificity and effectiveness, as it is naturally adapted to persist within the habitat of the host, providing long-term suppressive control in coniferous ecosystems.

Rates and timing

Application rates are determined by the concentration of polyhedral inclusion bodies (PIBs) per unit area, typically applied via aerial or ground-based spray equipment.

Timing the application to coincide with the early larval instars is critical, as younger larvae are significantly more susceptible to viral infection and cause less damage to the foliage.

Restrictions

Environmental stability is the main limiting factor, as prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation can degrade the virus on the surface of needles before ingestion occurs.

Although the product is highly specific and safe for non-target organisms, standard safety protocols including the use of protective clothing should be followed during the mixing and application process.
