Mode of action
Metiram belongs to the dithiocarbamate chemical class. It is a broad-spectrum fungicide characterized by strictly contact action, meaning it does not penetrate deeply into plant tissues.
The mode of action involves inhibiting the cellular respiration of pathogenic fungi. The substance blocks the activity of enzymes containing sulfhydryl groups, which disrupts the energy metabolism within fungal cells.
The product creates a protective film on the surface of leaves and stems. Due to the presence of zinc in its composition, metiram also provides a secondary stimulating effect on the physiological processes of the crop plant.
A key property is its high resistance to being washed off by rainfall once the spray solution has dried on the leaf surface. The substance acts as a preventative measure by inhibiting the germination of pathogen spores.
Since metiram lacks systemic properties, it is essential to ensure uniform and thorough coverage of the entire leaf surface during application to achieve effective protection.
What it targets
This active ingredient is effective against a wide group of diseases caused by fungi from the classes Oomycetes and Ascomycetes.
Primary application targets include:
- Late blight and early blight in potatoes and tomatoes.
- Downy mildew in grapes.
- Scab in apples and pears.
- Rust and leaf spots on various vegetable crops.
Rates and timing
Application rates vary depending on the specific crop, the intensity of the disease pressure, and the agricultural practices employed.
Typically, working solutions are prepared based on concentrations ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 kg of the product per hectare. For smaller garden applications, rates are adjusted for 10 liters of water.
Timing is strictly regulated by the preventative nature of the product. Metiram must be applied before visible symptoms of the disease appear or at the very first signs of infection.
The frequency of application ranges from 2 to 4 times per season with an interval of 7 to 12 days. During periods of rapid vegetative growth, it is recommended to shorten the interval between sprayings.
The final application must be carried out 20 to 30 days before harvest to ensure that no residues remain in the marketable produce.
Restrictions
Metiram is classified as a moderately hazardous compound (WHO Class III). Standard personal protective equipment is required when handling and applying the product.
The product is toxic to bees and other beneficial pollinating insects; therefore, applications should not be made during the active flowering period of the crops.
It is not recommended to mix metiram with highly alkaline substances, such as Bordeaux mixture, as this may reduce the effectiveness of the active ingredient.
Spraying should not occur in the immediate vicinity of bodies of water or pastures, as the substance poses a risk to aquatic life.
Storage must be in a dry, cool area, kept separate from food, feed, and away from the reach of children and pets.
