Mode of action
Citrus extract belongs to the group of natural biopesticides based on plant metabolites. Its chemical activity is primarily driven by high levels of terpenes, specifically D-limonene, which serves as the core active component of these formulations.
The mode of action involves the disruption of lipid layers in the cell membranes of pests and pathogens. Upon contact, active compounds dissolve the waxy cuticle of insects or the spore walls of fungi, leading to rapid dehydration and mortality of the target organism.
Unlike systemic pesticides, citrus extract functions primarily through contact activity. It does not penetrate deep into plant tissues but instead forms a protective film on the surface, ensuring immediate disinfection of the treated area.
The agent is highly volatile, facilitating the rapid evaporation of active substances. This prevents the accumulation of toxic residues in fruits and soil, making it an ideal solution for organic and sustainable farming practices.
Biological efficacy is enhanced by a fumigation effect. The vapours from essential oils irritate insect receptors, leading to disorientation and the suppression of their feeding behaviour.
What it targets
Citrus extract-based products are used as broad-spectrum insecticides and acaricides. They are effective against soft-bodied pests, including aphids, whiteflies, thrips, and various species of mites.
As a fungicidal agent, the extract suppresses the development of surface mycoses. It effectively combats powdery mildew, grey mould, and alternaria during the early stages of infection development.
The spectrum of application includes fruit orchards, berry fields, open and greenhouse vegetable crops, and ornamental plants. The product is frequently used to clean fruit surfaces from sooty mould growing on insect secretions.
Due to its natural origin, citrus extracts can be integrated into comprehensive plant protection systems. They allow for a reduction in overall pesticide usage by substituting synthetic chemicals, particularly during the pre-harvest period.
Target organisms also include certain types of scale insects. The high concentration of active ingredients allows them to penetrate under the insect's protective shell, ensuring the elimination of pests hidden from conventional contact poisons.
Rates and timing
Application rates vary depending on the target pest and the crop's growth stage. Typically, aqueous emulsions with a concentration of 0.2% to 0.5% are used for preventive treatments.
In cases of high pest populations or visible symptoms of fungal infection, the concentration of the working solution is increased to 1.0–1.5%. A crucial condition is thorough coverage of all plant surfaces, including the undersides of leaves.
Treatment timing is determined by monitoring pest populations. It is recommended to apply the product during the early morning or evening hours to avoid the rapid evaporation of active components caused by direct sunlight.
Application frequency is not strictly limited due to the absence of cumulative effects. However, to prevent resistance and maintain long-term efficacy, it is recommended to rotate the use of citrus extract with products from other chemical classes.
There is virtually no pre-harvest interval. This allows for treatment just days or even hours before harvesting, which is critical for crops with short maturity cycles.
Restrictions
The main limitation is phototoxicity when recommended concentrations are exceeded or when applied under extreme heat. Over-application can cause scorching of leaf tissues, particularly on young and delicate shoots.
Applications are not recommended during peak bee activity, despite the natural origin of the agent. Active substances can have short-term repellent effects on beneficial insects.
The agent does not provide a long-lasting protective period due to the high volatility of its compounds. If infectious pressure is high or pests reproduce rapidly, repeat treatments every 5–7 days are required.
Compatibility in tank mixes requires prior testing. Citrus extracts may react with certain metals and alkaline components, which can reduce their stability.
Safety precautions during handling include the use of personal protective equipment for skin and eyes. While toxicity to humans is low, concentrated forms can cause irritation to mucous membranes.
