Chitosan

Description

Mode of action

Chitosan is a natural biopolymer derived from chitin, typically extracted from crustacean shells, widely used in modern crop protection.

In agriculture, it acts as an elicitor, triggering Systemic Acquired Resistance (SAR) which enhances the plant's natural defense mechanisms against various stressors.

The compound exhibits direct antifungal activity by binding to the negatively charged cell membranes of fungi, leading to membrane disruption and cellular death.

When applied as a spray, chitosan forms a microscopic biodegradable film on leaf surfaces, reducing transpiration and preventing the colonization of pathogens.

Furthermore, chitosan promotes plant growth and vigor by stimulating root development and improving the absorption of microelements from the soil.

What it targets

It is effective against a wide range of phytopathogens, including powdery mildew, gray mold, late blight, and root rot diseases in various crops.

Chitosan is particularly useful in protecting vegetables, small fruits, and ornamentals from both fungal and specific bacterial pathogens.

Rates and timing

Seed treatment is a common application method to protect seedlings from soil-borne pathogens during the critical early stages of germination.

Foliar application is recommended during periods of high disease pressure to maintain the high immune status of the crop throughout the season.

Standard protocols usually involve multiple applications with intervals of 7 to 14 days, adjusted according to the specific crop and environmental conditions.

Restrictions

Chitosan is non-toxic to humans and beneficial insects, making it an ideal candidate for integrated pest management (IPM) and organic farming.

Users should maintain the appropriate pH level in the tank mix, as the efficacy of chitosan decreases significantly in alkaline environments.

Avoid mixing with incompatible agrochemicals that may cause the polymer to precipitate before it can be effectively applied to the foliage.

Application during calm weather conditions is essential to ensure uniform coverage, as the protective film requires time to dry and set on the plant tissue.
