Description

Mode of action

Carfentrazone-ethyl belongs to the triazolinone chemical class. It is a selective contact herbicide that effectively suppresses broadleaf weeds.

The substance acts as an inhibitor of the enzyme protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO). Blocking this enzyme leads to the disruption of chlorophyll synthesis and the accumulation of metabolic intermediates within the plant.

Under sunlight, the accumulated metabolites cause rapid destruction of weed cell membranes. This leads to swift wilting and necrosis of tissues in sensitive species.

The preparation is rapidly absorbed by the leaves and possesses practically no systemic activity, meaning it does not move through the phloem. This ensures no residual effect on subsequent crops in the rotation.

High efficiency is observed even at low temperatures, making it a sought-after choice for early spring field treatments before crop emergence or during the period of active growth.

What it targets

The primary target of carfentrazone-ethyl is broadleaf weeds. It is particularly effective against species that exhibit resistance to sulfonylurea herbicides and hormone-based weed killers.

The product successfully controls species such as common lambsquarters, common ragweed, pigweed, knotweed species, catchweed bedstraw, and other hard-to-eradicate weeds.

In specific concentrations, the substance is used as an effective desiccant for pre-harvest drying of cereals, sunflowers, and potatoes, accelerating the ripening process and simplifying harvesting.

Due to its rapid contact action, it is indispensable for eliminating volunteer crops that have grown from seeds remaining in the field after the previous season.

It is important to remember that carfentrazone-ethyl shows almost no biological activity against grass weeds, so it is often complemented with specialized graminicides in tank mixes.

Rates and timing

The application rates of the preparation directly depend on the stage of weed development: the smaller the growth phase, the lower the required dosage of the active ingredient per hectare.

When used in tank mixes to enhance the effect of other herbicides, the rate of carfentrazone-ethyl can be significantly reduced, which is economically beneficial for agricultural producers.

As a desiccant, the timing of application is determined by the moisture level of the grain or tubers, usually at the beginning of the crop's full physiological maturity.

An important factor in determining the timing is the presence of sufficient leaf surface area of the weeds for high-quality coverage with the spray solution.

It is recommended to carry out the treatment during morning or evening hours in the absence of strong wind to minimize spray drift onto neighboring sensitive crops.

Restrictions

The main limitation is the requirement for high-quality coverage of the entire leaf surface of the weeds, as the preparation is not translocated within the plant.

It is not recommended to apply the herbicide if crops are stressed due to drought, excess moisture, or pest damage to avoid potential phytotoxicity.

When preparing tank mixes, it is necessary to conduct a compatibility test with other pesticides, especially if fertilizers or adjuvants are being used.

There are strict requirements regarding the sanitary protection of water bodies: the product must not be allowed to enter open water sources due to its potential toxicity to aquatic organisms.

When working with carfentrazone-ethyl, the use of personal protective equipment for skin, respiratory organs, and eyes is mandatory to prevent irritation and chemical exposure.
