Carbofuran is a powerful systemic insecticide and nematicide belonging to the carbamate chemical class. It functions by inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, which is vital for the nervous system of insects and nematodes.
By preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine in the synaptic cleft, the substance causes continuous nerve stimulation. This results in tremors, paralysis, and ultimately the death of the target pest.
The chemical is highly systemic, meaning it is absorbed by plant roots and translocated throughout the vascular system, providing protection to new foliage and stems after application.
Carbofuran exhibits both contact and stomach poison activity. This versatility allows it to control a wide range of pests, including those that live hidden within the plant tissues or deep inside the soil.
Due to its high biological activity, it provides long-lasting residual protection. Depending on environmental factors such as soil pH and moisture, the protective effect can persist for several weeks.
What it targets

A mandatory pre-harvest interval (PHI) must be strictly observed, often ranging from 30 to 60 days, to ensure that the residues in the harvested crop are within safe, regulated levels.

The substance poses a significant risk to non-target wildlife, particularly birds and bees. Aerial applications and treatments during the blooming period are strictly prohibited in many jurisdictions.
Due to environmental persistence and toxicity to beneficial organisms, its use is heavily restricted or banned in many countries. It is categorized as a high-risk pesticide by various environmental agencies.
Producers must ensure that application areas are marked, and no grazing or harvesting occurs until the required safety interval has passed to prevent secondary poisoning.
Disposal of empty containers and unused chemicals must be handled through certified hazardous waste facilities. Preventing environmental contamination of waterways is a critical aspect of responsible use.
