Mode of action
Azimsulfuron belongs to the sulfonylurea chemical class. It is a systemic, selective herbicide that is rapidly absorbed by both the leaves and roots of weeds.
The active ingredient inhibits the enzyme acetolactate synthase (ALS) in the meristematic tissues of weed plants. This leads to the cessation of the synthesis of essential amino acids such as valine and isoleucine.
As a result of these metabolic disruptions, the cell division of weeds stops immediately. The growth of the weed ceases within just a few hours after application.
Complete control of sensitive species occurs within 1–3 weeks, depending on weather conditions and the growth stage of the weeds. Plants gradually show chlorosis and eventually desiccate.
Azimsulfuron is characterized by high selectivity because rice plants rapidly metabolize the substance into inactive forms, ensuring safety for the crop.
What it targets
The herbicide is designed to control a wide range of broadleaf and sedge weeds, as well as certain grass species in rice paddies.
It effectively suppresses species such as bulrush (Scirpus spp.), sedge (Cyperus spp.), and water plantain (Alisma spp.), which frequently infest rice fields.
The product provides control over a broad spectrum of hard-to-eradicate perennial weeds that reproduce vegetatively, including rhizomatous species.
It shows high activity against arrowhead species that compete with rice for nutrients and sunlight in aquatic environments.
The spectrum of action also includes certain species of pigweed and other weeds commonly found in rice-growing regions.
Rates and timing
Application rates for the herbicide depend on the weed composition and their development stages. Typically, low dosage rates of the active ingredient per hectare are used.
Application is recommended during the period of active weed growth, starting from the emergence of weed seedlings to the tillering stage of the crop.
An important condition for high efficacy is maintaining a consistent water level in the paddies, which must be uniform and meet standard agricultural requirements.
The herbicide can be applied post-emergence of the rice, but no later than the boot stage of the crop development.
To prevent the development of resistance, it is recommended to rotate the use of azimsulfuron with herbicides from different chemical groups.
Restrictions
The application of this product is strictly limited to rice crops. Using it on other crops may lead to severe damage or total crop loss.
Avoid spray drift onto neighboring crops that are sensitive to sulfonylurea herbicides.
Treatment should not be carried out during forecasted night frosts or sudden temperature fluctuations, as this reduces the metabolic rate of the rice plants.
After herbicide application, it is necessary to monitor the water level in the paddies, ensuring neither complete drainage nor overflowing during the first few days.
Strict adherence to regulations concerning the protection of bees and aquatic organisms is mandatory to prevent contamination of fish-bearing water bodies.
