The metallic blister beetle (Pomphopoaea aenea) is a member of the Meloidae family within the order Coleoptera. This species is characterized by its brilliant, metallic greenish or copper-colored elytra, which make it easily visible in the garden.

The adult beetle typically measures between 10 and 15 mm in length. Its body is elongated with a distinct head and robust chewing mouthparts. The legs are well-developed, allowing the beetle to cling firmly to floral structures during feeding.

These beetles are known as blister beetles because their hemolymph contains cantharidin, a potent toxin. If crushed against human skin, this substance causes severe irritation and the formation of fluid-filled blisters, requiring caution when handling them.

The life cycle of this beetle is complex, often involving parasitic larval stages that develop within the nests of solitary bees. The emergence of adults in spring and early summer is timed to coincide with the blooming season of their preferred host plants.

Metallic blister beetles thrive in warm, sunny environments. They are diurnal insects, often found basking or feeding on floral parts during the brightest and hottest hours of the day.

What it damages

The metallic blister beetle is a polyphagous pest, meaning it feeds on a wide variety of plants. It causes the most significant damage to the reproductive structures, such as buds and flowers, which are essential for crop production.

Fruit trees such as apples, pears, apricots, and peaches are common targets. The beetles consume the petals, stamens, and pistils of flowers, leading to total blossom loss and significant reduction in fruit yield.

Ornamental gardens are also frequently impacted, with roses, lilacs, and hawthorns being highly susceptible. Heavy infestations can strip plants of their flowers, severely diminishing their aesthetic value and causing stress to the plant.

Vineyards may also suffer damage from these insects. The beetles chew irregular holes in young leaves and devour grape blossoms, which directly affects the formation of fruit clusters and overall vineyard productivity.

Due to their gregarious nature, metallic blister beetles can appear in high densities almost overnight. Their rapid feeding behavior can destroy a significant portion of the harvest if immediate intervention is not practiced.

When it appears

Adult activity typically begins in late spring and continues into early summer. The precise timing of their emergence is highly dependent on regional temperatures and the heat accumulation throughout the early part of the year.

Activity is highest on warm, sunny days. During cooler or rainy weather, the beetles tend to remain inactive, sheltering within the foliage or near the base of the plant, which makes them harder to detect.

The species undergoes complete metamorphosis. Females deposit eggs in the soil, and the larvae develop through several stages, often relying on the nests of ground-nesting insects as their primary food source.

Warm and dry weather conditions can accelerate the development of the beetles, leading to early emergence. This can catch growers unprepared, especially if the beetles arrive precisely during the sensitive full-bloom period of crops.

The population of adult beetles naturally declines after the breeding season. By mid-summer, most adults have finished their life cycle, leaving the garden until the following season.

Signs of infestation

The most obvious sign of an infestation is the presence of metallic-colored beetles on the blossoms. Their distinct shine makes them quite conspicuous, especially when they gather in large groups on a single plant.

Damage is characterized by chewed petals and flower parts. The flowers may appear mangled or partially consumed, with irregular edges. In severe cases, the blossoms may be entirely absent, leaving only the stem.

Foliage damage appears as small to medium-sized irregular holes in the leaves. Furthermore, the presence of dark excrement on the remaining plant parts is a common indicator that beetles have been feeding on the plant.

Management of the metallic blister beetle requires an integrated approach. Manual collection, cultural practices, and chemical control are the standard methods used to keep population levels below the economic threshold.

For small-scale infestations, manual collection is effective. Early in the morning, when the beetles are sluggish, they can be shaken off into a container of soapy water. Always wear protective gloves to avoid contact with the beetle's toxic hemolymph.

In cases of high infestation, insecticides may be necessary. It is critical to choose products that are compatible with integrated pest management (IPM) and safe for pollinators, applying them only when absolutely necessary and following label directions.

Cultural control includes deep tilling of the soil around the base of trees in autumn. This disrupts the soil-dwelling life stages of the beetle, significantly reducing the number of adults that will emerge the following spring.

Maintaining a weed-free environment in and around the orchard can also help, as these beetles may use various wild plants as temporary food sources before moving onto the more desirable orchard or garden crops.
