The blister beetle (Mylabris elegantissima) is a member of the Meloidae family within the order Coleoptera. The common name comes from the toxic substance cantharidin found in their hemolymph. When the beetle is threatened, it secretes this fluid, which can cause blisters and skin irritation if handled directly, requiring caution during agricultural inspections.

The larval stage undergoes hypermetamorphosis, a complex development process. Larvae are often found in the soil or in the nests of wild bees and ground-nesting wasps, where they feed on the host's eggs or provisions, linking their life cycle to the broader field ecosystem.

The insect follows a complete metamorphosis life cycle: egg, larvae, pupa, and adult. Adults are highly active during warm, sunny days, as they rely on external heat to maintain high metabolic rates for feeding and mating.

These beetles are primarily distributed in arid and semi-arid climates. Their ability to thrive in these conditions makes them a persistent threat to agricultural fields located in regions with hot, dry summers.

What it damages

Damage is visually characterized by ragged, partially consumed flowers. Affected blossoms often drop prematurely after the beetle has fed on the reproductive tissues, leaving the plant unable to complete its natural pollination cycle.

The severity of the damage is proportional to the pest density. Monitoring threshold levels is essential, as even a moderate infestation during the peak flowering window can significantly reduce the potential yield at harvest.

When it appears

Adult beetles typically appear in late spring or early summer, coinciding with the flowering period of major agricultural crops. This timing aligns their feeding cycle with the most vulnerable developmental stages of the plants.

Activity peaks during the hottest hours of the day. In cooler or overcast weather, the beetles often seek shelter within the foliage, which can sometimes lead to an underestimation of their actual numbers during field scouts.

Signs of infestation

The most obvious sign of infestation is the presence of adult beetles on flower buds or blooms. Due to their high-contrast coloration, they are relatively easy to spot during routine field inspections.

Another indicator is the presence of damaged or missing floral parts. Finding petal debris underneath plants or observing partially eaten, deformed flowers is a clear signal that the blister beetle population is active in the area.

Controlling this pest requires an integrated approach focusing on crop management and, if necessary, the targeted application of insecticides to prevent yield loss.
