How to identify

The Tamsui click beetle (Melanotus tamsuynensis) belongs to the Elateridae family of the Coleoptera order. Adult beetles have an elongated body, typically dark brown or reddish-brown with a distinct metallic luster.

The primary agricultural threat comes from the larvae, commonly known as wireworms. They are characterized by a cylindrical, hard, chitinous exoskeleton, typically yellow to dark brown in color, which makes them highly resistant to physical stress.

The larvae possess three pairs of equal-sized thoracic legs and a well-developed head capsule with powerful chewing mouthparts, enabling them to easily damage underground plant structures.

Adult beetles are named for their unique ability to flip themselves into the air with a clicking sound when placed on their backs, which is a key identifying characteristic of the entire family.

The presence of adult click beetles on the soil surface or within crop debris during the spring serves as a warning sign for potential larval populations developing in the underlying soil.
