How to identify

The black click beetle (Melanotus niger) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the Elateridae family. The adult beetle typically measures 11–15 mm in length and possesses a dark brown or black body with a distinct metallic luster.

A key identifying feature of this insect is the thoracic mechanism, which includes a spine on the prosternum that fits into a groove on the mesosternum. This allows the beetle to snap and jump when it is on its back.

The larvae, commonly known as wireworms, are characterized by a cylindrical, heavily sclerotized, and yellowish-brown body. As they grow, they can reach 20–25 mm in length, having very tough, rigid cuticles.

The life cycle of this pest is quite extensive, lasting between 3 and 5 years depending on environmental conditions. Most of the damage is caused by the larvae, which live and develop exclusively within the soil profile.

Adult beetles are predominantly nocturnal and are often attracted to artificial light sources. Following mating, females lay eggs in the soil, favoring damp areas with sufficient organic debris and dense ground cover.

What it damages

The black click beetle is a generalist pest that attacks a wide array of crops. Cereal crops such as wheat, barley, rye, and corn are the most frequent targets, but horticultural crops also face significant threats.

Wireworms cause damage by feeding on seeds during germination, as well as by severing roots and tunneling into the stems of young plants. This often leads to sparse stands and visible gaps in crop fields.

Corn, potatoes, sugar beets, and carrots are highly susceptible to wireworm infestation. The larvae tunnel through tubers and taproots, causing secondary rot and making the produce unmarketable.

Damage caused by larvae often facilitates the entry of secondary pathogens, such as fungi and bacteria, leading to root rot and systemic wilting. Seedlings affected early in the season often die, requiring replanting.

While adult beetles are known to feed on the leaves of various plants, their impact on foliage is generally considered negligible compared to the severe underground damage caused by the developing larvae.

When it appears

Adult black click beetles emerge from the soil in spring, usually during April or May, once the soil temperature reaches levels above 10–12 degrees Celsius.

Mass flights of the beetles occur throughout the late spring and early summer. During this time, they engage in feeding and mating activities, preparing for oviposition in suitable moist soil habitats.

Larvae remain active throughout the growing season, though their vertical movement within the soil is heavily dictated by soil moisture levels. In dry periods, they migrate deeper into the ground to find optimal humidity.

As autumn approaches and temperatures drop, the larvae gradually retreat to deeper soil horizons to overwinter. They remain in a state of dormancy until conditions become favorable again in the following year.

The peak period of crop vulnerability occurs in the spring, when the presence of young, tender seedlings coincides with the period when wireworms are most active in the upper layers of the soil.

Signs of infestation

A primary indicator of a black click beetle infestation is the appearance of thin, patchy crop stands. Large empty areas in fields often reveal seeds that have been hollowed out by larval feeding.

Inspection of stunted or wilting plants typically reveals severe damage to the root system and underground stems. Roots often appear severed or chewed, and stem bases may contain clear boreholes.

On harvested tubers or root crops, one can observe deep, narrow tunnels, which are a hallmark of wireworm activity and easily distinguished from the damage caused by other common soil pests.

Agronomists monitor larval populations using soil sampling techniques or food-based traps. Early detection is crucial for determining whether chemical or cultural intervention is necessary.

The monitoring of adult beetles using light traps during their flight phase provides valuable data for predicting potential infestation levels in specific fields for the upcoming seasons.

Control measures

Effective management of the black click beetle requires an integrated approach that combines cultural, chemical, and biological strategies to reduce population density below economic injury levels.

  • Implementing crop rotations that include non-host species to disrupt the wireworm life cycle.
  • Consistent weed control, particularly of couch grass (Elymus repens), which serves as a reservoir for larvae.
  • Liming acidic soils, as these beetles prefer acidic conditions, which are less suitable for larval survival when soil pH is corrected.
  • Deep autumn tillage, which exposes larvae to predators such as birds and subjects them to lethal freezing temperatures.
  • Applying insecticidal seed treatments to protect crops during the vulnerable germination phase.

For large-scale agricultural operations, in-furrow insecticide application during the planting of susceptible crops is a common practice to provide a localized barrier against larval attack.

Biological control agents, including entomopathogenic fungi and nematodes, are increasingly utilized as sustainable alternatives to synthetic pesticides for managing wireworm populations in the soil.
