The flat wireworm (scientifically known as Melanotus depressus) belongs to the beetle family Elateridae, commonly known as click beetles.
Adult beetles are dark brown to black, typically measuring between 12 and 18 mm in length. They are characterized by a dorsoventrally flattened body, which is their most distinctive physical feature.
The larvae, widely referred to as wireworms, possess a hardened, cylindrical body that is yellow or brownish, allowing them to navigate through compacted soil with ease.
The lifecycle is lengthy and complex, often lasting from three to five years, consisting of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages.
Adults are primarily nocturnal. They are known for their unique ability to right themselves when placed on their backs by snapping their thoracic segments, which produces a clicking sound.
What it damages
The larvae of Melanotus depressus are significant polyphagous pests that attack a wide variety of crops, including cereals, maize, potatoes, and sugar beets.
