How to identify
The steppe click beetle (Melanotus cribulosus) is a member of the Elateridae family, order Coleoptera. Adult beetles are elongated, measuring 15–20 mm in length, and possess a dark brown or black color.
The name "click beetle" originates from their unique ability to right themselves when placed on their backs by flicking their thoracic segments, creating a distinct audible snap.
Their larvae, widely known as wireworms, are the primary damaging stage. They are characterized by a long, cylindrical, and rigid body with a tough, yellowish-brown cuticle.
The insect undergoes complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The lifecycle is relatively long, often spanning several years depending on soil and climatic conditions.
Females typically deposit eggs in moist, undisturbed soil, often selecting areas with dense vegetation or weeds to ensure an immediate food source for hatching larvae.
What it damages
Wireworms are polyphagous pests that target a vast array of crops, including cereals, sunflowers, corn, sugar beets, and various vegetable species.
Damage often begins at the germination stage, where larvae consume the endosperm and embryo of seeds, causing thin plant stands and forcing costly reseeding in affected areas.
In established plants, larvae feed on the primary roots and the sub-surface base of the stem, disrupting nutrient uptake and leading to wilting, yellowing, and eventually plant death.
Root crops such as potatoes and carrots are particularly susceptible; larvae tunnel into the tubers, drastically reducing the marketability and quality of the final harvest.
In addition to direct feeding damage, the tunnels created by wireworms serve as entry points for secondary pathogens, such as soft rot and fungal infections, which damage the crops further.
When it appears
Adult beetles emerge from the soil in spring as temperatures rise, usually when the soil reaches at least 10–12 degrees Celsius, typically occurring from April to May.
While adults feed on plant foliage, they cause negligible damage compared to the soil-dwelling larvae that remain active and feeding throughout most of the growing season.
Larval activity is heavily dependent on soil moisture levels. They prefer the upper root zone but will migrate deeper into the soil profile during dry or excessively hot periods.
As autumn approaches and soil temperatures drop, wireworms migrate downward to avoid freezing, entering a state of dormancy until the following spring season.
The most critical window for crop protection is the spring planting period, as wireworms are naturally concentrated in the topsoil layer where tender seedlings develop.
Signs of infestation
Visible signs of infestation include patchy field emergence where plants appear stunted, discolored, or wilted without clear surface-level pest causes.
Manual soil sampling and excavation in affected areas usually reveal the presence of stiff, wire-like larvae concentrated around the root system or germinating seeds.
Producers often use bait stations—buried starchy baits like potato slices or germinating grains—to monitor wireworm density and determine if corrective measures are required.
Heavy weed pressure, particularly from rhizomatous grasses like couch grass, is a strong indicator of suitable conditions for wireworm populations to thrive and reproduce.
At harvest time, signs include mechanical injury to root vegetables and tubers, characterized by clean, deep circular holes that are unmistakable markers of wireworm feeding.
Control measures
Successful management of the steppe click beetle requires an integrated approach that combines mechanical tillage, cultural practices, and chemical intervention.
Deep fall tillage is effective as it exposes larvae and pupae to extreme temperature fluctuations and predation by birds, significantly reducing the overwintering population.
Strategic crop rotation—avoiding continuous monocropping of cereals—helps disrupt the life cycle of the pest, especially when incorporating less susceptible crops.
Seed treatment with systemic insecticides is the gold standard for protecting crops during the early seedling stage, preventing primary damage from wireworms.
In high-pressure fields, soil-applied granular insecticides are employed during planting to provide a protective zone for developing roots, ensuring higher yield stability.
