How to identify

The narrow-necked click beetle (Lacon stricticollis) belongs to the Elateridae family, order Coleoptera. Adult beetles are characterized by an elongated body, measuring 10–12 mm, with colors ranging from dark brown to dull brownish tones.

The body is covered with dense, short hairs, providing a matte appearance. The species is distinct due to its narrow prothorax and the characteristic ability to snap or click when flipped over to right itself.

The larval stage, commonly referred to as a wireworm, has a cylindrical, highly sclerotized (hardened) body. Reaching up to 20 mm in length, larvae have a yellow-brown color and possess three pairs of robust thoracic legs.

The lifecycle typically lasts several years, with the majority spent in the soil. The development passes through egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages, with the wireworm stage causing the most economic damage to agricultural systems.

These beetles prefer warm, moderately moist soils. They are frequently found in fields where weed competition, particularly quackgrass, provides a consistent food source for the developing larvae.

What it damages

Larvae of the narrow-necked click beetle are polyphagous, meaning they feed on a wide range of underground plant parts, affecting cereals, legumes, technical crops, and vegetables.

The most severe damage occurs during the germination and seedling phases. Wireworms feed on swollen seeds, often destroying the embryo, which leads to poor stand establishment and empty patches in the field.

In later stages, larvae gnaw on roots and the subterranean stem base. This causes nutrient transport disruption, leading to wilting, stunted growth, and death of the plant in cases of high infestation.

Wireworm feeding creates wounds on the roots, which serve as entry points for various soil-borne pathogens. This often results in secondary root rot infections, further compromising crop health and final yield.

The level of damage is highly dependent on population density and soil conditions. Even low levels of wireworms can cause significant economic losses if the attack coincides with the critical early growth stage of the crop.

Control measures

Integrated pest management (IPM) for the narrow-necked click beetle starts with strategic crop rotation. Avoiding planting susceptible crops in fields infested with quackgrass is the primary preventive measure.

Deep autumn tillage is a crucial mechanical practice. By turning the soil, larvae and pupae are exposed to the surface, where they succumb to desiccation, temperature fluctuations, and predation by birds.

Using systemic insecticidal seed treatments is the most effective chemical method to protect seeds and young seedlings from early-season wireworm attacks.

Maintaining clean fields by controlling weeds throughout the growing season reduces alternative food sources for larvae, effectively suppressing the growth of the pest population.

Optimal sowing times, combined with proper fertilization to promote rapid early growth, help crops "outgrow" the vulnerable stage, making them less susceptible to the feeding pressure of wireworms.
