How to identify
Lacon setiger is a species of click beetle belonging to the family Elateridae. The adult beetles are characterized by their elongated, robust body, typically measuring around 10–13 mm in length, and covered with dense greyish or yellowish setae.
The coloration of these beetles ranges from dark brown to black, providing effective camouflage against the soil and organic debris where they reside during their life cycle.
The larval stage, commonly known as a wireworm, has a highly sclerotized, cylindrical body. Its tough cuticle protects it from environmental stress, allowing it to survive effectively in diverse soil conditions.
The lifecycle of this beetle is relatively long, with the larval stage often persisting for several years depending on soil temperature and nutritional availability.
Adults are known for their ability to snap their thoracic mechanism to flip over when placed on their backs, which is a defensive and locomotive strategy characteristic of the family.
What it damages
The primary economic damage is caused by the larvae (wireworms), which feed on the roots, tubers, and underground stems of various agricultural crops, including cereals and vegetables.
Young seedlings are particularly susceptible; larvae bore into the stems just below the soil surface, leading to wilting, stunted growth, or complete plant death and thinning of crop stands.
In root crops such as potatoes, carrots, and beets, wireworms create deep tunnels, which not only reduce the aesthetic quality of the harvest but also facilitate secondary infections.
Secondary infections caused by fungi and bacteria enter through the feeding wounds, often leading to rot and further reducing the marketability and shelf life of the produce.
High populations of wireworms in a field can lead to total crop failure, especially in areas where organic matter is abundant and cultivation methods are suboptimal.
When it appears
In the spring, as soil temperatures reach approximately 10–12 degrees Celsius, larvae migrate from deeper soil layers to the surface to feed on emerging roots and seeds.
Adult beetle flight typically occurs from late spring through early summer, during which time mating and egg-laying take place in moist, nutrient-rich soil layers.
During the hot summer months, if the soil surface becomes excessively dry, larvae move downward into deeper, more humid soil profiles to survive.
As autumn approaches and temperatures begin to drop, the larvae retreat to deeper zones, often 30–50 cm deep, to hibernate during the winter months.
The activity of the larvae is heavily dictated by soil moisture; optimal moisture levels significantly enhance their feeding intensity during the peak growing season.
Signs of infestation
The first sign of an infestation is often the presence of dead or wilting plants scattered throughout the field, often forming small patches or empty spots.
Upon removing the affected plants from the ground, one can usually observe clear evidence of gnawing on the stem base or a significant loss of root mass.
The presence of narrow, irregular tunnels in harvested root crops is a diagnostic sign of wireworm damage that has occurred during the growing season.
Mechanical cultivation of the soil during the early spring or late autumn may reveal the yellowish, hard-bodied larvae, which are characteristic of this species.
Reduced plant density and uneven crop establishment are common indicators of a heavy infestation, necessitating further scouting for the larvae in the root zone.
Control measures
Effective management includes deep autumn plowing, which exposes the larvae to predators such as birds and subjects them to desiccation from sun exposure.
Crop rotation is a vital strategy; including crops that are less preferred by wireworms can help disrupt the life cycle and lower the pest population over time.
Controlling weeds, particularly perennial grasses like couch grass, is essential, as these weeds serve as a primary food source for larvae in the field.
Seed treatments with appropriate insecticides provide critical protection for young seedlings during the most vulnerable period of early development.
For smaller areas, using bait traps made of sprouted grain or potato pieces buried in the soil can effectively monitor and reduce the larval population before planting.
