How to identify

Lacon curtus is a species belonging to the Elateridae family, commonly known as click beetles. The adult beetle typically measures between 10 and 13 mm in length, featuring a robust body covered in dense, greyish-brown scales that give it a dull appearance.

The larvae of this species, commonly referred to as wireworms, are characterized by their cylindrical, hard, and shiny bodies. Their exoskeleton is highly sclerotized, providing protection against soil pressure and minor physical damage.

These insects are well-known for their unique defensive behavior of "clicking." When turned upside down, they use a specialized mechanism between the thorax and abdomen to snap and flip back onto their legs.

The beetles are often found in forest-adjacent habitats and woodland edges, from which they can migrate into agricultural landscapes. Adults generally remain hidden under leaf litter or bark during the day.

The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis. The larval stage is notably long, often lasting several years, which complicates monitoring and management efforts in affected fields.

What it damages

The primary damage is caused by the soil-dwelling larvae (wireworms). They feed on underground plant parts, including seeds, roots, and subterranean stems, leading to severe crop loss.

Major crops affected include cereals like wheat and maize, as well as root crops such as potatoes and sugar beets. Wireworms are notorious for their ability to destroy germinating seeds.

In young crops, wireworms sever the root systems, causing plants to wilt, turn yellow, and eventually die. This leads to gaps in plant stands and reduces overall field density.

For root crops like potatoes, the larvae bore deep, narrow holes into the tubers. These injuries significantly reduce the aesthetic and commercial value of the produce and allow secondary pathogens to enter.

In high-density populations, wireworm activity can cause significant economic losses, sometimes destroying large patches of a field before the plants have a chance to establish properly.

When it appears

Adult beetles usually emerge in spring, typically from late April to June. During this time, they mate and search for suitable egg-laying sites in the soil.

Eggs are laid in moist, organic-rich soil. While the first-instar larvae appear during the summer, the older, more destructive larval stages remain active in the soil for several seasons.

Wireworm activity in the upper soil layers is largely dependent on moisture and temperature. They tend to move deeper into the soil during dry, hot weather and migrate upwards when conditions are favorable.

The complete generation cycle for Lacon curtus can range from three to five years. This extended period requires long-term crop rotation planning to disrupt the life cycle.

The most critical period for plant protection is the seedling stage, as young, tender roots are the primary targets for larval feeding.

Signs of infestation

The most obvious sign of an infestation is the appearance of wilted or dead seedlings within the rows. Affected plants can often be pulled from the soil easily due to root damage.

Soil sampling and the use of bait stations—such as buried potato halves—are effective methods for confirming the presence and density of wireworms in a field.

At harvest, signs of infestation on root crops appear as deep, narrow tunnels. These tunnels often remain open and serve as entry points for rot-causing bacteria and fungi.

Inconsistent crop emergence, where patches of plants fail to grow or appear stunted, is a strong indicator of localized wireworm activity.

Adult beetles may also be spotted near the field edges or in grassy buffer zones during the spring, which suggests a future risk of infestation.

Control measures

Strategic crop rotation is the cornerstone of wireworm management. Avoiding planting susceptible crops immediately after long-term pastures or grasslands is essential.

Deep autumn plowing with soil inversion helps expose the larvae to harsh weather conditions and predators like birds, significantly reducing their population density.

Improving soil pH through liming is highly effective, as wireworms generally prefer acidic soil environments. Neutralizing acidity creates a hostile habitat for the larvae.

Chemical control includes using insecticide-treated seeds or applying granular insecticides directly into the soil furrow at the time of planting.

  • Maintain weed-free fields, especially eliminating couch grass (Elymus repens).
  • Apply fertilizers that promote rapid seedling vigor to help plants withstand light feeding.
  • Use pheromone traps for monitoring adult beetle activity.
  • Incorporate bio-control agents such as entomopathogenic fungi into the IPM program.
