Description

How to identify

The blue click beetle Hemicrepidius subcyaneus belongs to the Elateridae family, order Coleoptera. Adult beetles are characterized by their elongated, dark bodies with a distinct metallic blue-black sheen, reaching 12-15 mm in length.

Larvae, commonly known as wireworms, are hard-bodied and cylindrical, with a shiny yellowish-brown cuticle. They are well-adapted to life in the soil and are highly resilient to mechanical pressure.

The name "click beetle" originates from the unique ability of the adults to right themselves when placed on their backs by using a thoracic mechanism that produces a clicking sound.

These insects undergo complete metamorphosis. The life cycle typically lasts several years, with most of this time spent in the soil as developing larvae.

Pupation generally occurs during mid-summer within a small earthen cell created by the larva, followed by the emergence of adults that remain in the soil over the winter months.

What it damages

Wireworms cause significant damage by feeding underground. They consume germinating seeds, young roots, and the subterranean parts of stems of various field crops.

Major host crops include corn, sunflower, sugar beet, and cereals. Extensive feeding can lead to severe thinning of stands, often resulting in total crop failure in heavily infested patches.

Besides direct physical damage, larvae create wounds on the roots that serve as entry points for soil-borne pathogens, leading to fungal diseases and root rot.

In dry conditions, the damage intensity increases significantly as larvae shift their feeding habits towards healthier plant tissues to compensate for a lack of moisture.

While adults feed on plant debris or flowers, their economic impact is minor compared to the persistent and destructive feeding activity of the larval stage.

Control measures

Effective management begins with good agronomic practices, such as deep autumn plowing, which exposes larvae to predators and desiccation by solar radiation.

Crop rotation is crucial in reducing wireworm populations. Avoid planting susceptible crops after grass leys or permanent pastures where beetle populations tend to be highest.

Seed treatment with systemic insecticides is the most common and effective preventive measure to protect vulnerable seeds and seedlings during the establishment phase.

  • Regular field scouting and soil sampling;
  • Management of grassy weeds;
  • Balanced fertilization to promote rapid crop growth;
  • Use of soil-applied granular insecticides in high-risk zones.
