The red-collared click beetle (Ampedus collaris) belongs to the Elateridae family, order Coleoptera. The adult beetle typically measures 8–10 mm in length, featuring a black body with a striking reddish-orange pronotum, which serves as a primary diagnostic trait.
Identification involves inspecting the pronotum shape and the distinct metallic luster of the elytra. The larvae, commonly known as wireworms, possess a cylindrical, rigid body with a sclerotized yellow-brown exoskeleton and powerful mandibles adapted for burrowing through wood.
Unlike many other elaterids that are soil-dwelling, Ampedus collaris is strictly associated with woody habitats. Its development cycle is tied to decaying deciduous wood, making it an ecological component of forest and orchard decay processes.
The life cycle includes four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults are known for their ability to flip themselves into the air with an audible clicking sound if placed on their backs, an evolutionary defense mechanism against predators.
Distinguishing Ampedus collaris from other Ampedus species in the field can be challenging without expert examination. Microscopic analysis of specific morphological features is often required for absolute taxonomic confirmation.
What it damages
The primary damage is caused by the larvae, which are xylophagous. They inhabit weakened or fungus-infected trees, feeding on decaying wood tissues, often near the cambium or heartwood, depending on the decay stage.
While not a major agricultural crop pest, the red-collared click beetle is recognized in forestry and orchard management as a pest that accelerates wood rot and facilitates the spread of fungal pathogens in weakened trees.
Damage symptoms include weakened tree vigor and reduced yield, particularly in old orchards where excessive deadwood and stumps provide breeding grounds. Larval activity disrupts vascular tissue, stressing the tree further.
In cases of high population density, larvae may extend their feeding range to healthy root tissues if the primary food source becomes depleted. This can lead to localized dieback of major tree branches.
The presence of this species is essentially an indicator of poor sanitation within an orchard, as it preferentially colonizes trees that are already compromised by decay or mechanical injury.
When it appears
Adult activity peaks during late spring and early summer, typically from May through July. During this time, the beetles emerge, mate, and deposit eggs into bark crevices or directly into suitable decaying wood.
Larvae remain hidden within the wood throughout their developmental period, which can span several years. They are active during the warmer months, feeding continuously within their woody substrate until reaching maturity.
Pupation typically occurs inside the wood in a pre-constructed chamber during late summer or autumn. Adults may overwinter within the larval gallery or beneath the bark, waiting for the spring season to emerge.
Environmental conditions, particularly wood moisture levels and ambient temperature, dictate the speed of development. Unusually wet or cold seasons can shift emergence timelines for the adult population.
Monitoring should be conducted during the peak flight season. Visual inspections of trunks and branches on sunny days are the most effective way to detect the presence of adults in the orchard.
Signs of infestation
Primary signs of infestation include exit holes on the bark and piles of fine wood debris, often referred to as frass, appearing near the base of the tree or on horizontal limbs.
The presence of dieback, wood-decaying fungi (polypores), or weeping wounds on the bark often signals that a tree is attractive to this species. Infested wood will typically sound hollow or appear brittle when probed.

Control measures
The most effective control strategy is rigorous orchard sanitation. Removing and destroying deadwood, stumps, and rotting branches is essential to eliminating the breeding habitat of this beetle.
Mechanical injuries to tree trunks should be treated promptly by cleaning, disinfecting with copper-based fungicides, and applying grafting wax to prevent insect colonization and fungal secondary infections.
Biological control includes promoting the presence of insectivorous birds that feed on wood-dwelling beetles. Maintaining ecological balance helps keep the population at sub-economic levels.
Chemical control is rarely justified and should be reserved only for severe infestations in young plantings. Contact insecticides can be applied during the adult flight period to reduce egg-laying success.
General tree health management, including balanced fertilization and proper irrigation, significantly increases the tree's natural resistance to wood-boring pests and secondary invaders.
