How to identify

The Alaus prosectus belongs to the Elateridae family, commonly known as click beetles. These insects are easily recognized by their elongated, rigid bodies and their ability to jump with a characteristic clicking sound.

A notable feature of this species is the presence of two large, prominent spots on the pronotum that resemble eyes. These spots serve as a defensive mimicry mechanism to intimidate potential predators.

The larvae of these beetles, widely known as wireworms, are characterized by a highly sclerotized, cylindrical body. They are typically yellow or brown in color and possess robust mouthparts adapted for boring into soil and roots.

These insects are primarily associated with forest margins and agricultural fields, favoring areas where the soil maintains sufficient moisture and contains organic matter.

Adult beetles are mostly identified during the late spring and summer months when they emerge from the soil to mate and disperse, often found resting on tree trunks or foliage.

What it damages

The primary economic damage is caused by the wireworms (larvae), which live underground and feed on the subterranean parts of various agricultural and ornamental plants.

Signs of infestation

Sudden wilting or chlorosis in patches of young crops is a strong indicator of wireworm feeding. This often occurs during the early growth stages of cereals or corn.
