The silky click beetle (Agriotes sericeus) is a member of the Elateridae family, known for its distinct silky appearance. The adult beetle typically measures between 11 and 13 mm in length and is covered with dense, fine hairs that give it a metallic or silky sheen.
The body color ranges from dark brown to black. A defining feature of these beetles is a unique mechanism between the pro- and mesothorax that allows the insect to snap or jump when it lands on its back, a trait from which the common name "click beetle" is derived.
The larvae, commonly referred to as wireworms, are easily recognizable by their long, cylindrical, and highly sclerotized bodies, which are yellowish-brown in color. They possess three pairs of short thoracic legs, enabling them to move through soil with remarkable efficiency.
The life cycle of the silky click beetle is prolonged, often spanning three to five years, depending on the environment. This means the pest exists in the soil in its larval stage for several seasons, posing a persistent threat to crop health.
The species is highly adaptable and can survive in various soil types, although it shows a preference for moist, heavy soils, which are ideal for the development of its offspring.
What it damages

While adult beetles can cause minor damage to leaves and flowers, their economic impact is negligible compared to the substantial damage caused by the underground larval population.
When it appears
Adult silky click beetles typically emerge in the spring, usually between April and June, depending on local temperatures. This is the period when they mate and lay eggs in the soil, favoring areas with dense vegetation.
Larval activity is closely linked to soil moisture and temperature. In the spring and autumn, when the soil is cool and moist, larvae move into the upper layers of the soil to feed on crop roots.
During the hot summer months, larvae tend to move deeper into the soil profile to avoid desiccation, returning to the root zone once temperatures drop and soil moisture increases in the autumn.
Winter is spent as larvae or adults at greater depths, where they are protected from freezing temperatures. This dormancy allows them to survive harsh winters and re-emerge to resume feeding early in the following season.
Effective scouting for adults and soil sampling for larvae should be synchronized with these seasonal movements to obtain accurate data for pest management decisions.
Signs of infestation
The first signs of an infestation are often observed as irregular patches of dying or missing plants within a field, often mistaken for poor germination or uneven seeding.
Inspection of affected plants usually reveals structural damage to the root system, such as severed stems or tunnels bored directly through the base of the plant stem, which is a hallmark of wireworm presence.
Tuber damage is characterized by clean-cut holes, often varying in depth and density depending on the severity of the population in that specific part of the field.
The presence of adult click beetles can be observed visually during the mating season on vegetation, serving as a warning sign for farmers to monitor the field for larvae in subsequent growing seasons.
Professional diagnosis often involves standardized soil sampling, where soil cores are extracted and examined for the presence of wireworms to quantify the population density per square meter.
Control measures
Managing the silky click beetle requires an integrated approach that combines crop rotation, mechanical soil disturbance, and chemical control when necessary.
Crop rotation is essential; avoiding susceptible crops after permanent grasslands or fallow land significantly reduces the population, as these areas are breeding grounds for click beetles.
Mechanical tillage, especially deep autumn ploughing, helps expose larvae to the surface, where they become vulnerable to predators like birds and adverse weather conditions, significantly reducing their numbers.
Chemical control is most effective when applied at planting. Insecticidal seed treatments provide a critical zone of protection, shielding the germinating seed from larval attack during its most sensitive stage.
