The dock weevil (Perapion antiquum) is a small beetle belonging to the family Apionidae. It is widely recognized as a pest specifically targeting plants of the genus Rumex (dock or sorrel).
The adult beetle is approximately 2–3 mm long, featuring a distinct pear-shaped body and a slender, elongated snout characteristic of the weevil family. Their color ranges from dark blue to black, often with a subtle metallic sheen.
The larvae are legless, C-shaped grubs with a pale body and a distinct brown head. They are rarely seen as they reside entirely within the internal plant tissues.
The pupal stage occurs inside the plant tissues, specifically within the stems or leaf petioles where the larva has completed its development. After metamorphosis, the young adults emerge by chewing a small exit hole.
This species is highly adapted to its host plants and is distributed across various temperate regions where sorrel and dock grow naturally or as cultivated crops.
What it damages
Both adults and larvae cause significant damage to the host plant. Adults feed on the leaves, creating characteristic small, round holes that decrease the plant's photosynthetic capacity.
Larval feeding is particularly destructive, as the larvae tunnel into the leaf petioles and main stems. This feeding behavior disrupts the vascular system of the plant.
Severely infested plants often show signs of stunted growth, leaf wilting, and chlorosis. In many cases, the plants may die if the infestation density is high during the early vegetative stage.
The tunnels created by larvae also serve as entry points for various bacterial and fungal pathogens, which can lead to secondary rot and further weaken the plant structure.
Marketable quality is severely compromised, as leaves perforated by adult beetles are aesthetically unappealing and often unsuitable for consumption or commercial sale.
When it appears
The dock weevil overwinters as an adult in sheltered locations, such as leaf litter, soil crevices, or among weeds, providing protection against winter frost.
Emergence occurs in early spring when temperatures reach approximately 10-12°C. This activity aligns with the fresh regrowth of sorrel plants, ensuring immediate food availability.
Mating occurs shortly after emergence, and females begin depositing eggs into the plant tissues. The egg-laying period can last for several weeks depending on environmental conditions.
Development from egg to adult takes approximately one month, though this is highly temperature-dependent. Multiple generations per year are possible in warmer climates.
By late summer, the final generation of adults enters diapause, moving into protected areas to survive the cold season until the next spring cycle begins.
Signs of infestation
The most prominent sign of an infestation is the presence of numerous small holes, often referred to as shot-holes, scattered across the surface of the leaves.
Wilting or drooping petioles, even when soil moisture is adequate, indicate that larvae are feeding internally and damaging the transport tissues of the plant.
Yellowing of the leaves or brown lesions along the stems are indicators that the larvae are active within the stalks and disrupting the plant's nutrient flow.
Adult weevils are often found clinging to the undersides of leaves, especially on sunny mornings. They are prone to dropping to the ground when disturbed.

Control measures

Crop rotation and ensuring the use of clean planting material are essential strategies to minimize the buildup of persistent infestations.
After harvesting the crop, remaining plant debris should be cleared and composted away from the field to ensure that any larvae present are destroyed rather than left to complete their cycle.
If chemical intervention is necessary, select insecticides labeled for sorrel, ensuring strict adherence to pre-harvest intervals to guarantee safety for human consumption.
