How to identify

The clover seed weevil (Ischnopterapion virens) is a small beetle belonging to the Apionidae family. Adult weevils are approximately 2–3 mm long and exhibit a distinctive metallic dark green or bluish color.

A key physical characteristic is the elongated, thin, and slightly curved snout, which is typical for weevils of this genus. The larvae are legless, C-shaped, and creamy-white with a dark head capsule.

Adult weevils overwinter in the soil surface, under leaf litter, or in dense vegetation near fields. As spring temperatures rise above 10°C, they emerge to begin feeding on young clover foliage.

The life cycle of this beetle is perfectly synchronized with the phenology of clover. They are highly active flyers, capable of colonizing new fields rapidly once the crop begins its vegetative growth phase.

Female weevils deposit eggs inside the developing buds or seed pods of the host plant, ensuring that the emerging larvae have direct access to their primary food source.

What it damages

The clover seed weevil primarily targets clover crops, specifically red clover, causing severe economic losses in seed production. It is a major pest for growers aiming for high-quality seeds.

Both adults and larvae contribute to crop damage. Adults feed on leaves and flower buds by chewing small, characteristic holes, which weakens the plant and reduces its overall vigor.

When it appears

The period of greatest pest activity coincides with the budding and flowering stages of the clover crop. Adults emerge in spring, with the peak population usually observed in May.

Egg-laying activity is most intense during the pre-flowering budding stage. This is the critical window for agronomic monitoring and potential intervention to prevent larvae from damaging the seed pods.

Larval development takes approximately 2–3 weeks inside the clover heads. By late June and July, the new generation of adults emerges, feeding on foliage before preparing for overwintering.

Environmental conditions, such as temperature and humidity, play a significant role in the timing of these stages. Warm, dry springs often accelerate the emergence and reproduction of the weevil.

Agronomists should maintain a regular scouting schedule during the vegetative and budding phases to capture the timing of beetle arrival and assess infestation pressure.

Signs of infestation

Early identification is possible by spotting small, pin-prick feeding holes on the leaves and buds of the clover. These aesthetic damages are clear indicators of adult weevil presence.

To confirm damage, field inspections involving the dissection of clover heads are necessary. The presence of larvae or empty, hollowed-out seeds within the pods provides definitive evidence of infestation.

A high number of adult weevils in sweep net samples is a primary warning sign. If counts exceed the economic threshold, producers must prepare for immediate management actions.

Distorted flower heads that turn yellow or wither prematurely often indicate high larval activity. Such signs are usually visible when the infestation has already reached a concerning level.

Consistent failure to produce uniform, healthy seed heads is often a result of chronic weevil activity that has been overlooked during the early stages of crop development.

Control measures

Cultural control methods include early harvesting of the clover for forage, which helps destroy larvae before they reach the pupal stage, thereby breaking the life cycle.

Maintaining spatial isolation between newly established seed crops and older clover stands is a highly effective way to limit the migration of weevils into new fields.

Chemical control should be implemented during the budding phase, but it is critical to select insecticides that are safe for pollinators to prevent harm to bees and bumblebees.

Regular monitoring using sweep nets allows farmers to apply control measures only when necessary, adhering to Integrated Pest Management (IPM) principles and reducing chemical use.
