How to identify
The pea weevil (Holotrichapion pisi) is a small beetle belonging to the Brentidae family. Adult beetles typically measure 2 to 3 millimeters in length and are easily identified by their elongated snout.
The body color of the adult beetle is usually black or dark blue, often with a subtle metallic sheen. They are covered with sparse, fine hairs, giving them a slightly matte appearance when viewed under magnification.
Larvae are legless, C-shaped, and creamy white in color with a dark-colored head capsule. They live entirely within the pea seed, where they undergo their development until reaching the pupal stage.
The pupa forms inside the seed cavity created by the larva. Because the entire life cycle after the egg stage happens internally, the insect remains protected from many environmental stressors.
Adults overwinter in sheltered locations, such as soil debris, field edges, or inside stored grain facilities, emerging in the spring when temperatures consistently rise.
What it damages
This pest primarily affects field peas. While it may occasionally be found on other legumes, the pea is its main host, providing the necessary conditions for its life cycle to complete successfully.
Adults consume leaves and buds, causing minor defoliation, but the larvae are responsible for significant economic damage. They feed on the cotyledons and embryos of developing pea seeds.
The damage caused by larvae leads to a substantial loss in seed weight and vitality. Infested seeds lose their nutritional value and, most critically, their ability to germinate properly.
Market value is severely impacted by the presence of exit holes, which are considered a quality defect in agricultural standards. This makes the crop unsuitable for human consumption or seed production.
Furthermore, the physical damage to the seed coat allows secondary pathogens such as fungi and mold to infiltrate the grain, which can cause rotting during storage if not handled correctly.
When it appears
Adult beetles migrate to pea fields during the bud formation stage. This timing is critical, as they begin feeding on the foliage before transitioning to reproductive structures.
The reproduction and egg-laying period are highly dependent on weather conditions. Warm and dry weather typically accelerates the developmental process of the larvae within the pods.
Peak activity occurs during the flowering and early pod-setting phases. During this time, female beetles deposit eggs directly onto the surface of the developing pea pods.
The larval stage lasts approximately one month. By the time of harvest, the majority of the population is either inside the seeds or preparing to overwinter elsewhere.
Post-harvest, the insect can remain active in stored grains if temperatures are adequate, creating a persistent risk for seed contamination and spread to new areas.
Signs of infestation
Early-season signs include small, circular feeding punctures on the leaves and stipules of the pea plants, caused by overwintered adults emerging from the soil.
Signs of egg-laying can sometimes be spotted as tiny dark markings on the surface of developing green pods, representing the entry points for the larvae.
The most obvious sign of an established infestation is the presence of perfectly circular exit holes in mature seeds, created by the new generation of adults leaving the grain.
When infested seeds are split, one can observe a cavernous hollow filled with larval frass and excrement, which confirms the presence of the pest.
Seeds infected by the pea weevil are notably lighter in weight and may exhibit surface discoloration or slight indentations where the larva breached the outer shell.
Control measures
Cultural control is a primary defense, including the use of crop rotation to break the pest's life cycle and physical separation of new fields from previous year's pea sites.
Planting early-maturing varieties can allow the crop to reach the pod-set stage before the pest population peaks, thereby reducing the level of infestation.
Chemical control must be applied at the correct phenological stage, typically during the budding to early flowering phase, to prevent eggs from being successfully laid on the pods.
Deep plowing after harvest is highly recommended, as it buries the plant residue and kills overwintering adults, preventing them from surviving until the next season.
Proper post-harvest management, including seed cleaning and storage in sealed containers, is essential to halt any further development of the weevil in the harvested crop.
