How to identify

The Mallow seed weevil (Apion transversum) belongs to the Apionidae family, within the order Coleoptera. These are small beetles, typically 2–3 mm in length, easily identified by the elongated rostrum (snout) characteristic of the weevil group.

The body is usually black or dark brown with a distinct metallic sheen. The elytra are covered in fine punctures, creating a unique texture that becomes visible under magnification.

The larvae are legless, C-shaped, and creamy white with a brownish head capsule. They are specialized for a cryptic lifestyle, spending their entire development phase feeding inside the seed capsules of host plants.

Adults possess functional wings, allowing them to disperse effectively during the flowering season of host plants. They prefer sunny, warm environments where they actively feed on foliage and buds before oviposition.

The insects overwinter as adults in the soil or under plant debris, emerging in the spring when temperatures rise, synchronizing their activity with the new growth of mallow species.

What it damages

The primary hosts of this pest are plants within the Malvaceae family. Significant damage is frequently reported on hollyhocks (Alcea), common mallows, and various ornamental cultivars grown in gardens.

Beyond ornamental varieties, the weevil may infest wild mallow species, which serve as natural reservoirs, allowing the pest population to persist in the vicinity of cultivated areas.

The primary damage is caused by larvae consuming the seeds within the pod. This activity leads to a drastic reduction in seed viability and ruins the aesthetic value of the reproductive parts of the plant.

In cases of high infestation, the pest can cause total failure of seed production, which is a major concern for seed growers and nurseries specializing in Malvaceae species.

The level of harm is directly correlated with population density; early-season monitoring is crucial to prevent the build-up of the population throughout the flowering stage.

Signs of infestation

The first indicator of an infestation is the presence of small, circular holes on leaves and young buds, caused by the adult weevils feeding after emerging from hibernation.

The most critical sign is damage to the developing ovaries. When pods are opened, one may find larvae feeding on the contents, leaving behind only hollow seed coats and frass.

Premature yellowing or dropping of immature seed pods is a common indicator of internal weevil activity. Affected inflorescences may appear deformed due to the impairment of seed development.

Adult beetles can be spotted on plants during hot weather, either moving along the stems or hiding within the sepals and leaf axils. Excrement left on the surface of pods is also a clear sign of presence.

By the end of the season, exit holes on dry seed capsules reveal where the new generation of adults has emerged before heading to their overwintering sites in the soil.

Control measures

The cornerstone of management is cultural control: diligent collection and destruction of plant debris at the end of the season is essential to eliminate overwintering sites for the adults.

Deep cultivation of the soil around host plants in the autumn can disturb overwintering adults, significantly reducing the population that will emerge in the following spring.

During the budding phase, the application of systemic insecticides can be highly effective. These chemicals move into the plant tissue, protecting the developing seeds from the larvae once they hatch.

Manual removal of the first infested seed pods can help curb the second generation of the pest, protecting a larger portion of the seed harvest.
