The Tiger seed weevil (Apion tigrense) is a member of the Apionidae family within the order Coleoptera. These insects are characterized by their small size and a distinct, elongated snout known as a rostrum, which is typical for the group.
The adult beetle possesses a robust chitinous exoskeleton, usually dark brown or black, often with a subtle metallic sheen. The common name refers to the distinctive, tiger-like pattern of hair setae on the elytra, which aids in identification.
Larvae are legless, curved, and exhibit a creamy-white appearance with a hardened, dark head capsule. They lead a cryptic lifestyle, living exclusively within the seeds or tissues of their host plants.
The species undergoes complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. This development cycle is closely linked to the phenology of the host plant, allowing the insect to synchronize its growth with the availability of nutrient-rich seeds.
Adult weevils are capable fliers, which facilitates their movement across fields during the flowering stage of legume crops to locate suitable sites for oviposition.
What it damages
This pest primarily targets various legume species, including both pulse crops and wild-growing legumes. The damage is most severe during the reproductive phase of the plant development.
Larvae feed directly on the internal tissues of the seeds, destroying the embryo and food reserves. This renders the harvested material useless for both consumption and, more importantly, for sowing in subsequent seasons.
Adult weevils feed on leaves and flower buds, causing minor structural damage that reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plant. While this damage is rarely lethal, it significantly weakens the overall vigor of the crop.

When it appears

The period between budding and flowering is critical. During this time, the weevils concentrate on the generative organs of the plants to feed and mate, after which the females begin laying eggs inside the developing pods.
Larval development occurs throughout the summer months within the host tissues. By the end of the summer, the new generation of adults reaches maturity and searches for suitable overwintering sites, often in the soil or under leaf litter.
Climatic factors such as humidity and temperature play a significant role in population dynamics. Unusually warm and wet springs tend to trigger earlier emergence and higher reproductive success for the beetles.
Monitoring for the presence of the Tiger seed weevil should be conducted using sweep nets during the early morning or late evening when the beetles are most active on the plant canopy.
Signs of infestation
The initial signs of infestation are recognizable by the small, circular holes ("shotholes") found on the leaves caused by adult feeding.

Chemical control involving systemic or contact insecticides should be applied during the budding stage to eliminate adults before they have the chance to lay eggs into the developing seed pods.
Sanitation practices, such as controlling wild legume weeds around the field margins, are essential to prevent the migration of weevils into the main crop area.
Where possible, utilizing early-maturing cultivars can help the crop escape the peak infestation period, providing a degree of natural protection against the heaviest pressure from the seed weevils.
