How to identify

The lucerne seed weevil (Apion soleatum) belongs to the Brentidae family, order Coleoptera. This is a small beetle, typically measuring between 2 and 3 millimeters in length.

The insect has a distinctive pear-shaped body with a dark blue or black coloration, often displaying a subtle metallic sheen. A key diagnostic feature is its long, slender rostrum used for feeding and laying eggs.

The larvae are legless, curved in shape, and possess a pale cream color. They develop entirely within the host plant's seeds, which is the primary reason for their high economic impact.

The pupal stage also takes place inside the seed pods, making the pest extremely difficult to detect during standard field inspections until significant damage has already occurred.

Adult weevils are capable of active flight, which allows them to migrate between fields and effectively colonize new alfalfa stands as soon as the weather warms up.

What it damages

The primary host for this pest is alfalfa (lucerne). The damage is most severe during the generative phase of the plant's development when seeds are forming.
