The clover stem weevil (Apion reflexum) belongs to the family Apionidae within the order Coleoptera. These beetles are relatively small, typically measuring between 2 and 3 mm in length, with a distinct pear-shaped body.
Adult weevils possess a long, slender rostrum (snout) typical of the Curculionoidea superfamily. Their coloration is usually black, often exhibiting a subtle metallic luster. Larvae are legless, slightly curved, and white with a dark head capsule.
What it damages
This pest primarily infests perennial legumes, with a strong preference for clover species. Both adult weevils and their larvae cause direct damage to the host plants throughout their development cycles.
Larvae feed internally within the stems, creating tunnels that disrupt nutrient transport. This damage weakens the plant structure, stunts vegetative growth, and leads to a significant decrease in both forage quality and seed yield.
When it appears
Adult weevils emerge from their overwintering sites in early spring as temperatures rise. The peak of adult activity coincides with the budding and early flowering stages of the host crops, which is critical for their reproductive phase.
Females deposit eggs directly into the plant tissue by boring small holes in the stems. The larval stage, which includes feeding and pupation, occurs entirely inside the stems, providing protection from external predators and environmental conditions.
Signs of infestation
Visual identification of infestation involves spotting small, localized swelling or deformation of the stems. Feeding marks, seen as tiny punctures or holes on the stem surface, are common indicators of adult weevil presence.
Plants affected by the pest often show signs of premature yellowing and wilting. In severe cases, particularly during drought conditions, the stems may become brittle and break, leading to poor crop uniformity and reduced biomass.
Control measures
Integrated pest management strategies focus on cultural practices such as timely mowing for hay before larvae can complete their development. This disrupts the life cycle and reduces the next generation's population density.
Chemical control involving systemic or contact insecticides is recommended if pest thresholds are exceeded. Applications should be timed carefully during the adult activity phase, ensuring full compliance with local regulations regarding pesticide use on forage crops.
