How to identify
The alfalfa seed weevil (lat. Apion neofallax) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Apionidae. It is a small snout beetle, typically measuring between 2 to 3 mm in length.
Adult beetles possess a dark, sometimes blackish or bluish-metallic body with a characteristic elongated rostrum (snout) which is a diagnostic feature of the family.
The larvae are legless, slightly curved, and white or cream-colored with a darker head capsule. They are exclusively internal feeders within the seed pods of the host plant.
These insects overwinter as adults in plant debris, leaf litter, or the top layer of the soil, emerging once spring temperatures provide sufficient warmth for activity.
The life cycle includes a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Identification in the field can be difficult due to the similarity with other Apion species.
What it damages
The primary host plant for this pest is alfalfa (Medicago sativa). Damage is specifically linked to the destruction of reproductive structures, causing severe yield losses.
