The broom seed beetle (Apion flavifemoratum) is a member of the Apionidae family within the order Coleoptera. These small weevils typically reach 2.5–3 mm in length, making them easily overlooked in field conditions during early infestation stages.
The adult beetle body is characterized by a dark blue to black color, often exhibiting a noticeable metallic sheen. A diagnostic feature for accurate identification is the presence of yellowish or reddish-orange femora (thighs), which serves as a reliable taxonomic marker for this specific species.
The head features an elongated rostrum or snout, a typical trait of weevils, which is used for both feeding and boring into plant tissues for oviposition. Their mouthparts are strong and adapted for chewing through the tough outer layers of pods and leaves.
The larvae are typically legless, slightly curved, and white or yellowish in color. They possess a darker, chitinized head capsule, which is essential for their role in burrowing into and consuming the developing seeds inside the legume pods.
As oligophagous insects, they have a specialized relationship with leguminous plants. They are highly mobile, and adults are capable of flight, allowing them to spread effectively between fields and search for suitable host plants during the growing season.
What it damages
The primary damage is caused by the larval stage of the broom seed beetle. Females bore holes through the young pod walls to deposit eggs, ensuring that the emerging larvae have direct access to the nutritious seed endosperm.
Larvae consume the seeds within the pod, leading to partial or total destruction of the grain. This results in significant yield loss, reduced seed weight, and severe degradation of the nutritional and commercial quality of the harvested crop.
In addition to direct seed consumption, the wounds created by the beetle facilitate the entry of secondary pathogens, such as fungi and bacteria. This often leads to pod rot and spoilage, potentially affecting the entire harvest during storage.
Under favorable conditions for the pest, infestation levels can result in 30–50% yield reduction. Because the larvae develop hidden inside the pods, detecting the infestation early enough to intervene effectively is a significant challenge for growers.
While adult beetles also feed on leaves and stems, creating small holes or notches, this type of injury is generally considered minor compared to the severe economic damage caused by the reproductive activity of the larvae within the pods.
When it appears
Adult beetles overwinter in sheltered locations, such as plant debris, leaf litter, or the upper soil layer. They emerge in early spring as temperatures rise, signaling the beginning of their active period.
The pest's life cycle is closely synchronized with the phenology of their host plants. Active colonization of legumes typically begins during the budding and flowering stages, as these plants provide the necessary tissues for egg-laying.
The development time for a single generation is usually around one month, though this is heavily dependent on ambient temperature and rainfall. Prolonged, hot summers may allow for a partial second generation, increasing pest pressure.
By mid-summer, adult populations often peak, and they begin seeking overwintering sites as the season wanes. Effective management requires monitoring populations before they move to these protected winter locations or start their next reproductive cycle.
Dry weather conditions can sometimes extend the flowering period of legumes, which inadvertently benefits the beetle by providing a longer window for oviposition, leading to higher infestation rates in those specific years.
Signs of infestation
Early signs of infestation include small, subtle entry holes on the surface of green pods. These are created by the females during the egg-laying process and may be surrounded by a small dark spot or discoloration.
Pod deformation or premature yellowing often suggests the presence of feeding larvae inside. If a pod is opened, one can frequently find the larvae along with frass (insect waste) and damaged seeds that have been hollowed out.
Adults are skittish and exhibit the behavior of "thanatosis," or playing dead, by dropping to the ground when disturbed. This makes them difficult to observe on plants without the use of an entomological sweep net for monitoring.
Small, circular exit holes observed on pods shortly before harvest are clear indicators that the new generation of adults has successfully completed its development and emerged, signaling a major loss of seed viability.
Damaged seeds are easily identified during harvest or post-harvest processing. They typically look shriveled, hollow, or light in weight, often being separated from the healthy crop during cleaning due to their lower density.
Control measures
Integrated Pest Management for the broom seed beetle begins with cultural practices. Rotating crops and maintaining spatial isolation between new legume plantings and previous year's infested fields are essential for reducing initial colonization.
Deep plowing post-harvest is a critical control measure. It buries crop residues, effectively trapping and killing larvae and pupae that remain in the debris, thereby reducing the population available to survive the winter.
Chemical control should be targeted at adult beetles during the budding phase, before egg-laying begins. Once larvae have entered the pods, they are protected from most contact insecticides, making timing crucial for success.
Consistent monitoring using yellow sticky traps or sweep nets is recommended to assess population density. Decisions on insecticide application should be based on established economic thresholds to ensure cost-effectiveness and minimize ecological impact.
