Description
How to identify
The collar weevil (Apion collare) belongs to the Apionidae family, within the order Coleoptera. It is a small insect, typically measuring between 2 and 3 millimeters in length.
The body is distinctively pear-shaped, which is characteristic of the genus Apion, featuring an elongated and slender rostrum used for feeding and egg-laying.
The adult is generally black, sometimes exhibiting a slight metallic luster. The specific name is derived from the structure of the thorax, which resembles a collar in its morphology.
The antennae are elbowed and clubbed, attached near the base of the rostrum. This physical structure allows the weevil to maneuver effectively on the surfaces of host plants.
Larvae are small, legless, and whitish in color with a dark head. They spend their entire developmental phase hidden within the tissues of the host plant, often inside seeds or pods.
What it damages
The primary hosts for the collar weevil are various legume species, including peas, vetch, clover, and alfalfa. These crops are highly susceptible to infestation.
Adult weevils feed on the leaves, creating small, characteristic shot-holes. While minor damage is usually cosmetic, heavy infestations can lead to significant loss of leaf area.
The larvae cause more severe damage by boring into the reproductive parts of the plant, such as developing buds, flowers, and immature seeds within the pods.
Feeding larvae destroy the internal contents of seeds, which drastically reduces the yield and compromises the quality of the harvested produce.
In addition to direct consumption, the wounds created by feeding activities facilitate the entry of secondary pathogens, leading to further decay of the plant tissue.
When it appears
Adults overwinter in the soil or under crop debris, emerging in early spring as soon as temperatures become favorable for their activity and host plants start to sprout.
The breeding cycle is closely tied to the growth stage of the legumes, with the most active period occurring during the budding and flowering phases of the host.
Depending on regional climate conditions, the insect may complete one or two generations per year, with activity peaking during the warmer months.
As summer progresses, the new generation of adults continues to feed on the remaining foliage before seeking protected sites to enter diapause for the winter.
Temperature fluctuations in autumn signal the end of the active season, prompting the insects to migrate into hibernation sites where they remain until the next spring.
Signs of infestation
Small, perfectly round holes in the leaves are the most common sign of adult feeding activity. These holes give the leaves a perforated appearance.
Premature dropping of buds or flowers is a strong indicator of larval presence. If the buds appear stunted or damaged, dissection often reveals the larvae inside.
Deformed, shriveled, or yellowing pods are classic signs that larvae are feeding on the seeds internally, hindering the plant's normal development.
During warm days, adults are visible on the plant surfaces but often exhibit a 'death-feigning' behavior, dropping to the soil as soon as they sense vibrations.
Patches of reduced crop vigor and uneven plant growth throughout the field can often be attributed to a high localized density of the collar weevil population.
Control measures
Good agricultural practices are the first line of defense. Rotating crops and ensuring spatial distance from previous year's legume plots disrupts the lifecycle.
Deep autumn plowing of fields helps reduce the overwintering population by burying the insects or exposing them to harsh weather conditions and predators.
Managing weeds, especially wild legumes around the field margins, removes alternative food sources and breeding grounds for the weevil.
Chemical control is effective if timed correctly. Insecticides should be applied during the period of maximum adult migration, just before the crop begins to bloom.
