The clover seed weevil (Apion candyae) is a small beetle belonging to the family Apionidae. The adult beetle is characterized by a pear-shaped body and a dark, often metallic or matte black color.
A distinctive physical feature is its long, slender snout, which is typically more pronounced in females. With an average size of only 2 to 3 millimeters, these pests are frequently overlooked during routine crop scouting.
The surface of the elytra is finely punctured, giving the beetle a rough texture. They possess well-developed legs, enabling them to move rapidly across the stems and foliage of their host plants.
The larvae are legless, white to yellowish in color, with a sclerotized brown head capsule. They spend their entire developmental phase hidden within plant tissues, making detection difficult without specialized tools.
Adults overwinter in the soil or under plant debris near legume fields. As temperatures rise in the spring, they emerge to begin their life cycle, feeding on young shoots to gain energy for reproduction.
What it damages
This pest primarily targets perennial legume crops, including various clover species, alfalfa, and sainfoin. Damage is inflicted by both the adult beetles and their larvae.
Adults feed on leaves and young stems by chewing numerous small, round holes. This feeding damage reduces the total photosynthetic area of the plant, which can significantly stunt growth if the infestation is severe.
The larvae are responsible for the most substantial economic damage as they develop inside flower buds, ovaries, and seed pods. By feeding on these reproductive organs, they directly destroy developing seeds.
Internal feeding leads to the distortion of stems and poor development of reproductive structures. Heavily infested plants may show signs of premature yellowing and wilting due to the disruption of vascular tissues.
Severe infestations during the flowering and seed-filling stages can result in yield losses of 20% or more. This is particularly problematic in dry years when plants have limited capacity to recover from physical stress.
When it appears
Emergence from overwintering sites typically occurs in early spring, when daytime temperatures reach a consistent threshold of 10 to 12 degrees Celsius. This timing usually aligns with the initial vegetative growth of clover and alfalfa.
The period of peak activity occurs during the budding and flowering phase of the crop. During this window, females use their snouts to drill into plant tissue, depositing eggs directly into the buds or pods.
Larval development takes several weeks depending on local temperatures. The larvae consume the inner parts of the flower or seed, pupating internally once they have reached maturity.
A new generation of adults emerges during the mid-summer period, which often coincides with the seed ripening stage. These young adults feed on the remaining foliage to store fats for the upcoming winter season.
As autumn approaches and temperatures begin to drop, the adult beetles migrate toward overwintering sites, such as forest edges, fence rows, or uncultivated field borders.
Signs of infestation
The earliest sign of an infestation is the presence of small, circular feeding holes on the leaves. These holes are a clear indicator of adult weevil activity in the field.
Premature drying or dropping of flower buds is a major sign of larval presence. If a bud appears withered or hollow before it has a chance to bloom, it is likely infested with a larva.
Reduced vigor and stunted plant growth compared to neighboring healthy plants often indicate internal damage caused by larvae feeding within the stems or developing seeds.
Irregular seed maturation and the presence of brown, shriveled seed pods are critical symptoms that signal significant larval damage at the reproductive stage of the crop.
To confirm the presence of these pests, agronomists should use a sweep net during the morning hours, as this is when the beetles are most active and likely to be caught in the sweep samples.
Control measures
Effective management begins with proper crop rotation and the spatial separation of new legume stands from established ones to limit the migration of over-wintered adults.
Timely cutting or harvesting of hay crops during the early budding phase can significantly reduce the pest population by destroying eggs and developing larvae before they reach maturity.
Implementing deep tillage after harvest is a recommended practice to bury crop debris and disrupt the overwintering habitat of the beetles, which helps lower the population for the following season.
Chemical control using systemic insecticides may be necessary during peak infestation periods. Applications should be timed carefully to avoid harming beneficial pollinators, preferably by applying products during the late evening.
