The tropical coffee bean weevil, Araecerus vieillardi, is a member of the Anthribidae family. Unlike true weevils, members of this family have a broader rostrum and distinct antennae that end in a well-developed club.
Adult insects are small, typically measuring 3–5 mm in length. Their bodies are oval-shaped and covered in fine hairs, giving them a mottled brown or grey appearance, which helps them blend into their surroundings.
The larvae are white, legless grubs that live entirely within the seed or bean. This internal lifestyle protects them from many external threats and makes manual detection difficult without cutting or imaging the commodity.
This species is highly adapted to tropical and subtropical climates but thrives indoors within warehouses and processing facilities. If temperatures are maintained consistently, the life cycle continues without interruption throughout the year.
The development time from egg to adult depends heavily on environmental conditions, with optimal reproduction occurring at temperatures between 25°C and 30°C and high humidity levels.
What it damages
Araecerus vieillardi is a significant pest of stored tropical commodities, including coffee, cocoa beans, and various legumes. Both adults and larvae can cause damage, though the larval stage is the most destructive.

Adult weevils are often observed on the surfaces of containers or storage walls during the early morning or evening. Their presence outside the product is a clear warning sign that the population density is increasing.

Strict sanitation protocols are the first line of defense. Warehouses must be kept free of spills and debris, and all corners and crevices should be cleaned regularly to remove hidden breeding sites.
Fumigation using phosphine-based products is the standard industrial method for neutralizing infestations in large batches of raw commodities. Proper sealing of the storage facility is crucial for the success of this treatment.
Maintaining low humidity levels within warehouses is highly effective in suppressing the growth of Araecerus vieillardi. By keeping storage areas dry, the environment becomes less favorable for the survival of the larvae.
Phytosanitary inspection at borders is essential to prevent the spread of this pest via international trade. If an infestation is detected upon arrival, the entire shipment must be treated or quarantined before entering the local market.
