How to identify
The coffee bean weevil (Araecerus fasciculatus) belongs to the Anthribidae family (fungus weevils) of the order Coleoptera. Adult beetles are 3 to 5 mm long, with a robust, convex body covered in dense brownish hairs.
The most distinctive feature of the adult is the presence of a rostrum (snout) and antennae that end in a well-defined three-segmented club. This morphology distinguishes them from other common storage weevils.
The larvae are creamy white, C-shaped, and possess a robust, hard head capsule with powerful mandibles capable of boring into the hardest seeds, including coffee and cocoa beans.
Pupation occurs within the food source, inside a small chamber excavated by the mature larva. The pupa is initially pale and undergoes visible changes as it develops into an adult.
As a global pest, this species thrives in international trade, hitchhiking in containers of tropical agricultural commodities to new geographic regions where they infest storage facilities.
What it damages
This beetle is a polyphagous pest capable of attacking a vast range of plant products. It is notorious for causing significant economic losses in the coffee and cocoa industry worldwide.
Beyond coffee and cocoa, the pest frequently infests dried fruits, nutmeg, corn, ginger, and a variety of legumes and oilseeds. It can also survive on botanical materials in storage.
The larvae bore tunnels into the seeds, consuming the embryo and endosperm. This damage destroys the nutritional value, reduces the seed weight, and renders the product completely unusable.
Infestation leads to secondary damage as well, with the accumulation of insect frass and webbing, which creates an environment conducive to the rapid growth of molds and fungi.
In heavily infested batches, the structural integrity of the beans is destroyed, making them look hollow or powdery, causing total rejection by quality control and market standards.
When it appears
The coffee bean weevil does not have a set season in storage environments; its development is entirely dependent on environmental conditions, specifically temperature and humidity.
In tropical conditions, the insect breeds continuously throughout the year. In temperate regions, it is confined to warehouses, silos, or processing plants that maintain warm temperatures.
The complete life cycle from egg to adult takes approximately 30 to 60 days. Rapid generations occur when humidity levels exceed 60% and temperatures remain between 25°C and 30°C.
Adult females deposit eggs into small punctures made on the surface of the beans or seeds, ensuring the offspring have immediate access to food upon hatching.
High population densities can be achieved within a few months if sanitation is poor and the storage environment provides constant optimal conditions for the pest's metabolism.
Signs of infestation
The primary visual sign of an infestation is the presence of circular exit holes on the surface of the beans, indicating that adults have emerged after development.
A dusty residue, often called "bean dust" or frass, will accumulate at the bottom of containers or sacks, signaling the active feeding process of the larvae within the bulk.
Infested seeds become light, brittle, and often exhibit a dull appearance compared to healthy, glossy beans. When handled, these beans shatter easily.
A musty or moldy odor is often detected in infested batches, caused by the colonization of fungi in the tunnels and holes created by the weevils.
The presence of adult beetles crawling on the surface of bags or near shipping containers is a clear indication that a new generation has emerged and the infestation is active.
Control measures
Effective management begins with stringent phytosanitary inspection of imported commodities to prevent the entry of infested goods into new storage facilities.
Fumigation is the most effective method for eradicating the beetle in stored grains. Phosphine gas is commonly used in sealed environments to penetrate the seeds and kill all life stages.

- Maintenance of low humidity levels (below 50%) to inhibit larval development.
- Storage at temperatures below 15°C to suppress beetle activity.
- Use of pheromone traps to monitor and catch adult populations.
Good storage design, including insect-proof sealing and regular cleaning of residues from walls and floors, is essential for long-term prevention of infestation.
In cases of confirmed heavy infestation, the affected goods should be immediately quarantined, treated, or destroyed to prevent the spread to clean stocks.
