The coffee bean weevil (Araecerus fasciculatus) belongs to the Anthribidae family within the Coleoptera order. It is a small beetle, typically measuring between 3 and 5 mm in length.
The insect has an oval body shape and is brownish in color. The elytra are covered with dense hairs that create a mottled pattern, providing effective camouflage against various organic surfaces.
The head of the pest features a short, broad rostrum, distinguishing it from the elongated snouts of true weevils. A key identification feature is the prominent three-segmented club at the end of its antennae.
The larvae are legless, cream-colored, and possess a robust head capsule. They lead a secretive lifestyle, completing their entire development cycle inside the kernel of the host grain or seed.
Originally native to tropical and subtropical regions, this species is now a global pest of stored commodities, frequently transported via international trade in coffee, cocoa, and various other agricultural goods.
What it damages
The coffee bean weevil is a significant polyphagous pest capable of infesting a wide range of agricultural products. It is primarily notorious for damaging coffee beans, which is reflected in its common name.
Beyond coffee, this beetle thrives on cocoa beans, corn, peanuts, dried fruits, spices, and a variety of nuts. It causes massive economic losses in the food industry by destroying stored stock.
The primary damage is inflicted by larvae that bore into the seeds, consuming the interior content and leaving behind only an empty, structurally compromised shell that is essentially worthless.
Infested produce is prone to secondary contamination, including the growth of various molds and fungi. These pathogens further degrade the quality of the stored items, making them unsafe for human consumption.
The accumulation of frass, dead larvae, and exuviae significantly alters the sensory profile of the products, introducing bitterness and offensive odors that are irreversible during processing.
When it appears
The lifecycle of the coffee bean weevil is heavily influenced by ambient temperature and humidity levels within warehouses. The species thrives in conditions ranging from 25 to 30 degrees Celsius.
Under optimal tropical conditions or in climate-controlled storage facilities, the insect can reproduce continuously throughout the year. A single generation typically completes its cycle within 30 to 50 days.
Females oviposit by drilling small holes into the host material and depositing eggs. A single female can produce up to 100 eggs in her lifetime, allowing for exponential population growth in susceptible storage areas.
Infestations often reach peak levels during warmer periods of the year when ambient temperatures inside storage facilities facilitate rapid larval development and adult emergence.
While lower temperatures (below 15 degrees Celsius) reduce activity and metabolic rates, they do not necessarily eradicate the population, meaning the pest can remain dormant until conditions improve.
Signs of infestation
The most visible indicator of an infestation is the presence of small, circular holes in the seeds, which are created by adults as they emerge from the pupal stage.
A fine, powdery dust, often referred to as "boring dust" or frass, is typically found underneath or around infested bags, indicating active feeding by the larvae inside the material.
Adult beetles can frequently be observed crawling on the exterior surfaces of bags or storage crates. They are mobile and may become particularly noticeable when the storage area is illuminated.
A persistent stale or moldy odor often emanates from heavily infested batches. This smell is a reliable sensory clue that significant internal damage and microbial decay are already underway.

Fumigation is the most reliable method for treating already infested commodities. Using approved gaseous fumigants, such as phosphine, ensures the destruction of the pest at all life stages.
Utilizing hermetic or pest-proof packaging can prevent re-infestation during transportation and long-term storage. Regular monitoring with pheromone traps helps detect early presence before a massive outbreak occurs.
An integrated pest management strategy should include regular inventory audits, strict hygiene protocols in warehousing, and rapid intervention at the first sign of adult or larval activity.
