The dark flower thrips (Thrips atratus) belongs to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. These insects are characterized by their small size and dark, often black or deep brown, coloration.

Adults possess two pairs of slender wings fringed with long hairs, which is a diagnostic feature of the order. The mouthparts are of the rasping-sucking type, specialized for piercing plant tissue and extracting cell contents.

Larvae are typically lighter in color, ranging from pale yellow to whitish, and lack wings. Their life cycle includes stages of egg, two larval instars, prepupa, pupa, and adult, with development significantly influenced by ambient temperatures.

This species is highly polyphagous, meaning it can thrive on a wide range of host plants, including ornamental flowers, legumes, and various vegetables. Its adaptability allows it to persist in both open fields and greenhouses.

Under optimal conditions, particularly in warm greenhouse environments with temperatures exceeding 20-25°C, the lifecycle can be very short, allowing for multiple overlapping generations within a single growing season.

What it damages

Thrips atratus causes substantial damage to a variety of commercial crops, including floral and vegetable varieties. It is particularly notorious for damaging the generative parts of plants, such as buds and blooms.

Feeding occurs by piercing the plant cells and emptying their contents, which results in the collapse of tissue. This not only reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the foliage but also ruins the aesthetic and market value of floral products.

The feeding process is often accompanied by the transmission of plant pathogens. These thrips can act as vectors for various viral diseases, which can lead to systemic infections and plant death.

Severe infestations lead to visible deformity of the plant organs, such as curled leaves and shriveled flowers. If left unchecked, the damage can prevent fruit setting, leading to significant yield losses.

The economic impact is high because the population can explode quickly, making early detection and intervention critical for preventing total crop failure in sensitive stages.

Signs of infestation

The primary symptom of infestation is the appearance of silvery or whitish streaks and patches on the leaves. As feeding continues, these spots may coalesce, leading to necrotic zones.

When chemical control is necessary, apply insecticides with systemic or translaminar action to ensure that the product reaches thrips hidden within buds or deep within the plant structure.

Biological control agents, such as predatory mites (e.g., Amblyseius spp.) or minute pirate bugs (Orius spp.), can be highly effective in reducing thrips populations in protected agriculture environments.
