The alder thrips (lat. Thrips alni) is a small insect belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. Adults are typically elongated, measuring between 1 and 2 mm in length.
Their body color ranges from pale yellow to brownish, providing excellent camouflage against the foliage of host trees. They possess two pairs of narrow wings fringed with long hairs, which enable their movement between leaves.
The mouthparts are of the rasping-sucking type, specialized for piercing plant tissue and extracting cellular sap. Larvae appear similar to adults but lack developed wings and are generally lighter in color.
Systematically, this species belongs to a group of pests known for their diverse feeding habits, primarily colonizing host-specific or closely related plant species.
Identification often requires microscopic examination of the antenna segments and the chaetotaxy of the prothorax to distinguish this species from other related thrips.
What it damages
