The winged thrips (lat. Thrips alatus) is a common pest belonging to the order Thysanoptera. Its name is derived from the well-developed wings of the adults, which possess long fringes, allowing for effective flight between hosts.
These insects are generally very small, ranging from 1 to 2 millimeters in length. Their coloration varies depending on the specific species and life stage, typically ranging from light yellow to dark brown.
The mouthparts of the thrips are specialized for piercing and sucking. This anatomical feature allows them to rupture plant cells and extract the internal contents, causing significant physiological stress to the plant.
The lifecycle consists of egg, larva, propupa, pupa, and adult stages. Because the lifecycle is relatively short, populations can explode rapidly under favorable weather conditions, particularly in warm environments.

Damage is not limited to the leaves; reproductive parts such as buds and flowers are often targeted, leading to blossom drop, deformed fruits, and stunted growth.

Signs of infestation
One of the earliest signs of infestation is the appearance of tiny silver or speckled marks on the leaf tissue, created as the insect extracts plant juices and air fills the empty cells.
Small, dark fecal spots, which appear as tiny black specks on the underside of the leaf, are a reliable indicator of active thrips presence in the plant canopy.
Deformation of growing tips, curling of young leaves, and scarring on flower petals are classic symptoms that the pest population has reached a critical density.
