How to identify

Scirtothrips dignus belongs to the order Thysanoptera, family Thripidae. These are tiny insects with a body length typically ranging from 1 to 1.5 mm.

Adults possess a slender, yellowish-brown body and narrow wings fringed with long hairs. They are equipped with piercing-sucking mouthparts, specifically adapted for feeding on plant cell sap.

Larvae look similar to adults but are wingless and have a lighter body color. They are highly active and primarily congregate on the undersides of leaves.

The life cycle consists of the egg, larva, propupa, pupa, and adult stages. Under warm conditions, the pest's generation time is very short, leading to rapid population growth.

These insects prefer secluded habitats, hiding in leaf axils, flower buds, or blossoms, which makes early detection difficult without close inspection.

What it damages

Significant damage is caused by both adults and larvae feeding on young leaves, flower buds, and fruits, resulting in plant stress and reduced photosynthetic capacity.

Signs of infestation

The primary symptom of an infestation is the appearance of tiny light-colored spots or streaks on leaf surfaces, which eventually merge into large, silver-toned necrotic patches.

On the undersides of leaves, one can often find characteristic tiny black dots, which are the fecal droppings of the insects. Tissue distortion near feeding sites is also a common indicator.

Slow growth of terminal shoots and leaf curling are secondary symptoms that indicate a high population density of thrips on the plant.

For field confirmation, the tapping method—shaking foliage over a sheet of white paper—allows for easy identification of the small, moving insects.

Blue sticky traps are highly effective tools for monitoring population levels and reducing the number of adult thrips within greenhouse facilities.

Chemical control involves the use of systemic insecticides, provided that active ingredients are rotated regularly to prevent the development of insecticide resistance.

Biological control strategies include the release of natural predators, such as predatory mites (e.g., Amblyseius spp.) or minute pirate bugs (Orius spp.), which effectively hunt thrips larvae.
