How to identify

The bean flower thrips (Megalurothrips distalis) is a small insect belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. Adults are approximately 1.5 to 2 mm long, characterized by a slender, dark brown or black body.

They possess narrow wings fringed with long hairs, which is a hallmark of the order. The larvae are typically yellowish-white or orange, wingless, and resemble the adults in body shape but are smaller in size.

The life cycle involves an egg stage, two larval instars, prepupa, pupa, and adult stage. The duration of the cycle is highly dependent on ambient temperature, often accelerating in warm, dry weather conditions.

These insects overwinter in the soil at depths of 15-20 cm or within debris. In the spring, they emerge to infest available host plants, beginning their reproductive cycle.

Given their high reproductive rate, populations can explode during the flowering stage of susceptible crops, making early detection vital for effective management.

What it damages

This pest is a major threat to a wide range of legumes, including soybeans, peas, chickpeas, and various beans. They are especially destructive during the reproductive phases of plant growth.

The thrips feed by piercing the plant cells of flowers, leaves, and young pods to extract sap. This feeding process drains energy from the plant and introduces toxins that cause malformations.

Infested flowers often drop prematurely, significantly reducing pod formation and yield potential. When feeding occurs on young pods, it leaves necrotic spots, causing them to twist and shrink.

On leaves, feeding activity leads to discoloration, stippling, and a silvery appearance caused by the destruction of the epidermis and air entry into the leaf tissues.

Beyond direct damage, Megalurothrips distalis can transmit various plant viruses, further compromising the health and vigor of the entire crop.

Signs of infestation

One of the first signs of an infestation is the appearance of small, silvery or white streaks and stippling on the upper surfaces of the leaves, indicating sap extraction.

Examine the flowers closely; a high presence of thrips is usually indicated by distorted petals, discoloration, and a sticky residue (excrement) left behind on the floral parts.

Deformed or withered flower buds that fail to open are a common symptom. If pods have already formed, look for brown or black necrotic marks that disrupt the pod's normal development.

General stunted growth, shortened internodes, and a lack of vigor in the foliage are clear indicators that the plant is under stress from a thrips colony.

A field-wide bronze or silver sheen, visible from a distance, often signals a severe infestation that requires immediate intervention to prevent total yield loss.

Control measures

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Cultural practices like rotating crops with non-legume varieties disrupt the life cycle of the thrips.

Deep autumn plowing is a highly effective method for destroying overwintering pupae in the soil, effectively reducing the initial population density for the following spring.

Maintaining weed-free fields and field margins is crucial, as many weeds act as alternative hosts that harbor thrips before the main crop reaches the susceptible flowering stage.

If thresholds are exceeded, systemic insecticides are recommended for application, ideally during the early bud formation stage to protect the vulnerable reproductive organs.

  • Monitor populations using blue or yellow sticky traps.
  • Use insecticide-treated seeds to provide early-season protection.
  • Ensure balanced fertilization to keep plants healthy and more resistant to attacks.
