How to identify

The minor thrips (Craspedothrips minor) belongs to the Thysanoptera order, specifically the family Thripidae. These are extremely small insects, typically measuring between 1 and 1.5 millimeters in length, making them difficult to detect without a magnifying tool.

The body is elongated and generally light yellow to brownish in color. Their wings are very slender and edged with long, hair-like fringes, which is a characteristic feature of this insect group, aiding their identification.

Their biological life cycle progresses through several stages: egg, larva, propupa, pupa, and adult. The speed of this cycle is heavily influenced by ambient temperature, with warmer conditions significantly accelerating their reproductive rate.

Larvae are morphologically similar to adults but are lighter in color and lack fully developed wings. They are active feeders from the moment they emerge, constantly draining nutrients from host tissues.

Craspedothrips minor exhibits high environmental adaptability, allowing it to rapidly colonize various habitats ranging from open fields to highly controlled greenhouse environments.

What it damages

One of the earliest signs of infestation is the appearance of small silvery or chlorotic spots on the leaf surface. As the population grows, these patches enlarge and can lead to curling and leaf distortion.

Small black or dark brown dots, which are the excrement of the insects, are commonly found on the underside of leaves. Finding these spots is a key indicator of thrips presence in the absence of visual insect sightings.

Infested flower buds frequently fail to open or produce deformed, misshapen blooms. This significantly impacts the market value of flowers and fruits, making them unsellable or lower grade.

Terminal shoots may show signs of deformation and slowed development. In severe cases, the entire plant may appear stressed, lose its foliage, and suffer from secondary infections due to the weakened state.

Monitoring using blue or yellow sticky traps is the standard method for detecting the arrival and tracking the density of the thrips population before visible damage occurs.

Control measures

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for controlling minor thrips. This includes combining cultural practices with biological and chemical interventions to minimize population spikes.

Cultural control practices involve proper weeding of the surrounding area, as many weeds act as alternative hosts for the thrips. In greenhouses, maintaining proper humidity levels is crucial for inhibiting rapid growth.

Chemical control usually involves the application of systemic insecticides that target hidden pests within the leaf tissue. It is critical to rotate active ingredients to prevent the buildup of resistance.

Biological control methods, such as the introduction of predatory mites or beneficial insects, are highly recommended for greenhouse operations to reduce pesticide reliance and manage chemical residues.
