Anascirtothrips is a genus of insects belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. These are tiny, slender insects that typically measure around 1 mm in length.
Morphological identification of the genus requires microscopic examination of the antenna and abdominal structures, as they are often indistinguishable from other thrips species to the naked eye.
Their life cycle consists of the egg stage, two larval stages, prepupa, pupa, and adult. They spend most of their life feeding and breeding on host plant tissues.
Reproduction is temperature-dependent; warm and dry conditions significantly shorten their generation time, leading to rapid population growth in infested fields.
They are primarily known for being active during warmer seasons, utilizing these periods to expand their colonies across host plants.
What it damages
This pest infests a variety of plants, causing significant economic damage to legumes and several woody crops by piercing cells and consuming plant sap.
The feeding process results in the destruction of plant cells, which disrupts the photosynthetic capability of the foliage and stunts plant growth.
