How to identify

Tea thrips (lat. Anaphothrips theivorus) belong to the order Thysanoptera, family Thripidae. This tiny insect, usually 1-1.5 mm in length, has an elongated body with a color ranging from pale yellow to brownish.

Adults possess two pairs of narrow wings with characteristic fringes of hairs, which gave the order its name. Larvae visually resemble adults but differ in size, lack of wings, and a lighter, almost translucent body color.

The life cycle includes the egg, larva, propupa, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs directly into the tissues of young leaves or buds, making them inaccessible to many contact insecticides during the early developmental phases.

Optimal conditions for mass reproduction are high humidity and temperatures between 25-30 degrees Celsius. Under these conditions, generations develop rapidly, leading to an exponential increase in the population.

Because these insects lead a cryptic lifestyle, agronomists use yellow sticky traps for population monitoring. These effectively attract adults and allow for the assessment of infestation levels across the plantation.

What it damages

The primary host for this species is the tea plant (Camellia sinensis), although it can damage a wide range of associated crops in subtropical agricultural regions.

The pest prefers feeding on the most tender and youngest parts of the plant, such as terminal buds and unopened leaves. This significantly reduces the quality of the harvested tea leaves and slows down the vegetative growth of the bush.

During massive outbreaks, the pest spreads to older leaves, sucking cell sap from them. As a result, affected areas lose turgor, become deformed, and eventually die, leading to significant yield losses.

Beyond direct mechanical damage, thrips are vectors for several phytopathogenic viruses that affect tea plantations. These viruses can cause systemic diseases that cannot be cured with fungicides.

Economic losses from tea thrips include not only the reduction in raw material volume but also a significant decline in biochemical quality, which negatively impacts the taste and aroma of the finished tea product.

Signs of infestation

A characteristic sign of thrips presence is the curling and deformation of young leaves, which become wrinkled and lose their natural green color, taking on a bronze or silvery hue.

Tiny light-colored spots can be observed on the leaf surface, which eventually merge into large necrotic areas. This is the result of chlorophyll-bearing tissue destruction at the sites of active piercing and feeding.

Upon detailed inspection of the underside of the leaf, clusters of insect excrement often appear as tiny black dots. This sign is considered a reliable indicator of active insect presence.

In cases of severe infestation, premature dropping of buds and young shoots occurs. The plant becomes stunted, and its growth virtually stops, which is critical during periods of intensive tea leaf harvesting.

Control measures

Effective control of tea thrips requires an integrated approach, combining agrotechnical, biological, and chemical methods to prevent the development of population resistance.

A key agrotechnical measure is timely pruning and removal of damaged shoots, which significantly reduces the pest population. Maintaining a proper fertilization regime is also crucial, as weakened plants are more susceptible to attack.

Biological control involves the use of entomophages — natural enemies of thrips, such as predatory mites (Amblyseius spp.) and anthocorid bugs. These effectively keep pest numbers in check under natural conditions.

Chemical control is carried out using systemic insecticides during periods of peak insect activity. It is essential to rotate products from different chemical classes to prevent the rapid formation of resistance in thrips.

An important component of protection is controlling weed growth around plantations, as many weeds serve as alternate hosts for thrips during periods when the main tea crop is not actively growing.
