Sudanic thrips (Anaphothrips sudanensis) belongs to the order Thysanoptera, family Thripidae. This tiny insect has a yellow-brown to dark body, with adult specimens rarely exceeding 1.5 mm in length.

Adults possess narrow, fringed wings typical of the family. Larvae visually resemble adults but are smaller, wingless, and often have a lighter body color compared to the more mature stages.

This species reproduces both sexually and parthenogenetically. Females insert their eggs directly into plant tissue, making them difficult to detect during standard field inspections.

The life cycle duration is highly temperature-dependent. Under favorable climatic conditions, the pest can complete several generations per season, leading to rapid population spikes in agricultural fields.

Sudanic thrips are highly elusive, preferring to hide in leaf axils, stem sheaths, and flower heads. Detection often requires specialized methods like the use of sticky traps or systematic plant tissue sampling.

What it damages

Sudanic thrips are polyphagous and known to damage a wide range of crops. Major agricultural targets include wheat, barley, millet, sorghum, and maize.

The pest also utilizes wild grasses as alternative hosts, which serve as reservoirs for infestation between cropping seasons. They are capable of migrating to new host plants when primary sources are exhausted.

Damage is caused by the insect sucking cell sap from the plant tissues. This disrupts photosynthesis, hinders nutrient transport, and significantly slows down crop development during sensitive growth stages.

Feeding sites often show necrotic spots that eventually merge, leading to tissue chlorosis. Affected leaves may curl, distort, and turn yellow prematurely, causing a direct reduction in grain yield and quality.

Beyond direct mechanical damage, Sudanic thrips are recognized as potential vectors for several plant viruses, which can exacerbate economic losses in intensive cropping systems.

Signs of infestation

The first signs of infestation are characteristic silvery or whitish streaks on the leaf surface, which gradually turn into brown or necrotic patches as the infestation progresses.

In cereals, infestation can cause "white heads" or poorly developed grains within the ear. Small black droplets of excrement found inside leaf sheaths are a diagnostic sign of thrips presence.

Stunted growth is common in heavily infested plants, with weakened stems and under-developed inflorescences. This leads to substantial grain weight loss and poor structural integrity of the plant.

Hot and dry weather conditions usually accelerate symptom development. Massive populations can make fields appear scorched or severely withered, even when soil moisture levels are adequate.

To confirm the diagnosis, inspectors should use a hand lens to examine the underside of leaves and leaf axils, where these insects congregate to avoid direct sunlight.

Control measures

Agronomic control strategies include strict crop rotation, the elimination of alternative weed hosts, and deep autumn plowing to destroy pupae overwintering in the soil.

Early sowing dates are recommended to ensure that crops reach advanced growth stages before the population peak of the thrips, which typically occurs during the mid-summer heat.

Chemical control involves the application of systemic or contact-stomach insecticides once pest density exceeds the established economic injury level for the specific region.
