Systematic position: Varroa destructor is an ectoparasitic mite belonging to the family Varroidae, within the order Mesostigmata. It is widely recognized as the most significant biological threat to honey bee colonies globally, impacting agricultural productivity through the decline of essential pollinator services.
Host range: The primary host is the honey bee, Apis mellifera. While the mite does not consume crops directly, its presence causes a catastrophic decline in pollination efficiency for various horticultural and field crops, including fruits, oilseeds, and vegetables, leading to significant economic losses in the agricultural sector.
Biology and life cycle: The mite's lifecycle is perfectly synchronized with the development of the honey bee. Female mites enter the brood cell shortly before it is capped. During the pupal stage, the mites reproduce, feeding on the developing bee's hemolymph. This process often results in the emergence of deformed bees with weakened immune systems and reduced life expectancy.
Harmfulness and symptoms: The parasite causes physical damage to individual bees and fosters the spread of harmful viruses, such as Deformed Wing Virus (DWV). A heavily infested colony becomes progressively weaker, shows reduced foraging activity, and will often collapse during the winter months unless the population of the parasite is strictly managed.
Management and control: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Varroa populations:
- Application of specialized acaricides registered for use in beehives.
- Use of organic acids, such as oxalic or formic acid, as a sustainable alternative.
- Cultural practices, including drone brood removal, which interrupts the mite's reproductive cycle.
- Routine monitoring of mite levels to determine the threshold for treatment interventions.
