How to identify

The onion bulb fly (Ulidia erythropthalma) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Ulidiidae. The adult fly has a body length of 5–7 mm and is characterized by a shiny black or dark bronze coloration.

The eyes of the pest have a distinct reddish-brown tint, which is a key diagnostic feature. The wings are transparent with slight darkening and are held flat over the abdomen when the insect is at rest.

The larvae are white or yellowish-white, legless, and typically reach 8–10 mm in length. They have a pointed anterior end and distinct respiratory spiracles at the rear of the body, typical of dipteran larvae.

This species is common in southern regions, preferring sites with high soil moisture and dense crop stands. The adult fly is quite agile but remains sensitive to direct sunlight and low humidity conditions.

The life cycle of the fly is closely tied to the state of bulbous plants. Adults are active during the day, moving between foliage and soil surfaces in search of suitable sites for oviposition.

What it damages

The pest primarily affects onions, garlic, and sometimes leeks. It prefers to attack injured or decaying tissues but can also infest healthy plants when pest pressure is high.

Larvae penetrate the bulb, creating tunnels in the basal plate and succulent scales. This leads to the rapid breakdown of the plant's internal structure and facilitates secondary fungal and bacterial infections.

Damage manifests as stunted growth, yellowing, and wilting of the onion foliage. The affected bulbs lose their market value, become soft, and are highly susceptible to rotting during storage.

In cases of high infestation, larvae can destroy a large portion of the crop in a short period. Furthermore, they act as vectors for various plant pathogens that cause soft rot diseases.

Damage occurs throughout the growing season, particularly during drought periods when plants are weakened and become more attractive targets for fly infestation.

When it appears

The first generation of adults appears in late spring, coinciding with the period of active foliage growth. Females deposit eggs near the base of the plant or directly into damaged tissues.

The complete development cycle of one generation takes about 3 to 5 weeks. Throughout the season, the pest can produce 2–3 generations, leading to a rapid increase in population density in the field.

Peak larval activity occurs in mid-summer, which is a critical time for bulb development. Damage inflicted during this phase is the most devastating for crop yield and quality.

The pest overwinters as a puparium in the soil or among plant debris. In the spring, after the soil warms up, the adults emerge to begin the new reproductive cycle.

Climate conditions, especially spring rainfall, significantly impact puparial survival. Moderate humidity levels provide optimal conditions for the successful completion of each developmental stage.

Signs of infestation

The first sign of infestation is premature yellowing and wilting of the onion leaf tips, even when soil moisture is adequate. Plants can be easily pulled from the ground due to the destruction of the basal plate.

Inspection of the bulb reveals numerous tunnels filled with larval excrement and decaying material. The internal tissues become watery and develop a grayish-brown appearance.

A foul, putrid odor often emanates from the field, indicating the decomposition of plant tissues caused by larval feeding. Near the plants, adults can often be observed in moist, shaded areas.

Initial signs of damage often appear as scattered wilting plants, which eventually form patches of crop loss. Timely identification of these patches is essential for localizing pest control.

Control measures

The primary control measure is strict crop rotation, ensuring that onion crops are not replanted in the same field for at least 3–4 years. This effectively breaks the pest's reproductive cycle.

Deep autumn plowing is a highly effective prophylactic measure that destroys a significant portion of overwintering puparia by exposing them to harsh surface temperatures.

Good agricultural practices include timely weeding and the complete removal of crop residues after harvest, as these serve as reservoirs for the pest population.

Chemical control involves the application of insecticides during the period of peak adult flight, before egg-laying occurs. Products must be approved for onion crops and used according to label instructions.

Deterrent methods, such as dusting the rows with wood ash or tobacco dust, reduce the attractiveness of the field to the flies and create a physical barrier against oviposition.
