How to identify

The rice leaf miner, known scientifically as Hydrellia albiceps, belongs to the Ephydridae family, commonly referred to as shore flies, within the order Diptera.

Adults are small, grayish-brown flies measuring approximately 2–3 mm in length, which are highly mobile and capable of colonizing new paddy fields efficiently.

The larvae are cylindrical, colorless or pale yellow, and adapted specifically for mining the internal tissue of leaves, protected by the leaf epidermis.

The life cycle encompasses several stages: egg, larva, puparium, and adult, with the entire cycle being highly temperature-dependent.

Under optimal conditions, the pest can complete its development in a few weeks, allowing for multiple generations throughout the rice growing season.

What it damages

The primary host plant is Oryza sativa, although the species can also infest wild grasses present in or around the irrigation canals and paddy fields.

Larvae feed on the mesophyll tissue within the leaf, destroying the chlorophyll-containing cells and creating characteristic tunnels or mines.

This feeding damage significantly reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, which leads to stunted growth, reduced tillering, and overall plant weakness.

Severe infestations cause leaves to yellow and dry out prematurely, which can lead to substantial yield losses if not managed during the early vegetative stages.

Weakened plants are also more susceptible to environmental stressors and may show increased vulnerability to various fungal pathogens in the field.

Signs of infestation

The most distinctive symptom of infestation is the appearance of light-colored, serpentine mines on the foliage, created by the internal feeding of the larvae.

These mines start as thin, transparent lines and eventually expand into wider, brown-colored necrotic patches as the larva matures and tissue dies.

Infested leaves often curl, turn yellow, and eventually wither, causing the crop to appear sparse and yellowed from a distance.

Presence of the pest can also be detected by observing swarms of small flies hovering over the water surface during the early hours of the day.

Biological control methods involve protecting natural predators and parasitoids that help maintain the population balance in the agroecosystem.

Chemical control is applied when scouting confirms that the population has crossed the economic threshold, using systemic insecticides to target larvae inside the leaves.

Regular field scouting is essential during the early vegetative phases to detect early damage signs and apply targeted interventions before mass outbreaks occur.
