How to identify
The sugarcane stem borer (Polyocha depressella) belongs to the family Pyralidae, order Lepidoptera. Adults are relatively small moths with a wingspan of approximately 20–25 mm.
The forewings have an ochre-yellow to brownish color with distinct dark spots, providing excellent camouflage on dried sugarcane leaves. The hindwings are usually lighter, with a grayish-white shade.
The insect's body is slender and covered in dense scales. Filiform antennae are well-developed in both sexes, which aids the adults in navigating during their nocturnal activity.
Larvae (caterpillars) go through several stages of development, changing their color from light cream to grayish-brown. Their bodies feature prominent dark sclerotized plates with short hairs.
The pupa is elongated and brown, securely encased in a dense silk cocoon constructed by the larva inside the tunnels it has bored into the sugarcane stem.
What it damages
The primary host for this pest is sugarcane. The insect causes significant damage to both young shoots and mature plants during their peak growth phases.
Caterpillars feed on the internal tissues of the stem, boring deep tunnels into the core. This disrupts plant development and significantly reduces the accumulation of sugars.
The damaged areas act as entry points for secondary infections, including fungal diseases and bacterial rots, which severely degrade the quality of the harvested material.
Under heavy infestation, plants may lodge, making mechanical harvesting difficult and significantly reducing the marketable yield of the sugarcane crop.
