How to identify

The pistachio fruit moth (scientific name: Myelois duplipunctatella) is a member of the Pyralidae family within the order Lepidoptera. This pest is a specialist that targets pistachio trees throughout their growing cycle.

The adult moth is relatively small, with cryptic coloration that allows it to blend seamlessly into the bark of pistachio trees. They are nocturnal insects, making detection by observation during the day difficult.

The life cycle involves four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is the most destructive, as these insects directly consume the nut kernel, leading to significant economic consequences.

Overwintering typically occurs in the larval stage, either inside infested nuts that remain in the canopy or within bark crevices. As spring temperatures rise, they pupate and emerge as adults to restart the cycle.

Monitoring for this pest is conducted using pheromone-baited traps. These tools are essential for detecting the timing of peak flight activity and determining when to implement control measures.

What it damages

Damage is primarily caused by larvae that bore into the developing pistachio nuts. Once inside, they feed on the growing kernel, causing the fruit to be hollowed out and completely ruined for commercial use.

The infestation can occur at different stages of nut development. Early-season damage often leads to the abscission and premature drop of the fruit, while late-season damage compromises the final harvested product.

Beyond direct loss, the boreholes created by the larvae serve as entry points for secondary pathogens. Various fungi and molds can colonize the damaged nuts, exacerbating the overall quality decline.

In high-density commercial orchards, the pistachio fruit moth can cause substantial crop loss, sometimes affecting up to half of the harvest if left unchecked during high-pressure seasons.

This pest is a major challenge for growers, as the damaged nuts are unmarketable, and the cost of mitigation must be balanced against the value of the potential yield.

Signs of infestation

One of the earliest signs of infestation is the presence of frass (larval excrement) on the external surface of the pistachio shell. This is a clear indicator that a larva is actively feeding inside.

The presence of fine webbing that binds together infested nuts or connects them to leaves is another common indicator of larval activity. Larvae often use this silk to secure their feeding environment.

Darkened or necrotic spots on the hull surrounding a small borehole indicate where the larva penetrated the fruit. This is a common response of the plant tissue to the initial injury.

Dissection of a suspected nut usually reveals the larva itself or the hollowed-out interior filled with dark, crumbly debris. This confirms the presence of Myelois duplipunctatella.

Sudden yellowing or premature dropping of nuts that appear superficially undamaged should prompt a closer investigation of the canopy to check for hidden larval populations.

Control measures

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for controlling this moth. Sanitation is the foundational step, which includes the removal and destruction of all mummified nuts from trees after the harvest.

Pruning of the canopy to remove old, dead wood and potential overwintering sites reduces the local population density for the following season significantly.

Chemical control involves the application of appropriate insecticides timed precisely with the peak egg-hatching period. This ensures the larvae are targeted before they bore into the protective shell of the nut.

Biological control methods, such as the use of naturally occurring predators or microbial insecticides like Bacillus thuringiensis, offer sustainable alternatives to broad-spectrum chemical sprays.

Consistent monitoring and the adoption of threshold-based treatment plans help to minimize the need for prophylactic spraying, thereby protecting beneficial insects and reducing production costs.
