Adult moths are typically nocturnal and possess cryptic coloration that allows them to blend in perfectly with the texture and color of cactus pads. The larval stage is the most destructive phase of their life cycle.
Melitara larvae are gregarious, often living in groups and spinning webbing to protect themselves while feeding on the cactus tissue. Their development involves several larval instars, with each stage consuming progressively larger amounts of plant material.
